Day 1: Tokyo to Aomori — Gateway to Tohoku
Depart Tokyo by bullet train (Hayabusa, 3 hours). Arrive in Aomori — capital of Japan’s northern apple country. Visit the Nebuta Museum Wa-Rasse to understand the history and craft of the festival floats. Evening: your first Nebuta Matsuri experience — massive illuminated floats parade through streets as haneto dancers leap and shout “Rasse-ra!” Overnight in Aomori.
Day 2: Aomori Nebuta Matsuri — Full Immersion
Morning visit to a nebuta float workshop — meet the artisans who spend months creating these elaborate paper-and-wire masterpieces, some weighing over 4 tons. Try on a haneto dancer costume. Afternoon at the Aomori Prefectural Art Center featuring works by local son Yoshitomo Nara. Evening: the Nebuta Matsuri’s grandest night — the largest and most spectacular floats parade, culminating in a fireworks display over Mutsu Bay.
Day 3: Akita Kanto Festival
Journey to Akita by limited express train through rice paddies and mountains. Afternoon visit to a kanto training center — try balancing a mini bamboo pole with lanterns under expert guidance. Evening: the Akita Kanto Matsuri — watch in awe as performers balance 12-meter bamboo poles weighing up to 50kg hung with 46 paper lanterns. They balance these on their foreheads, shoulders, and hips while drummers and flutists play ancient festival music. The lantern-lit streets create a river of floating light.
Day 4: Kakunodate Samurai District
Journey to Kakunodate — the “Little Kyoto of Tohoku,” a beautifully preserved samurai district. Visit the Ishiguro Samurai House and Aoyagi Samurai Manor Museum, walking streets lined with weeping cherry trees and 400-year-old samurai residences. Afternoon: continue to Yamagata through the spectacular mountain scenery of Dewa Sanzan.
Day 5: Yamagata Hanagasa Festival & Ginzan Onsen
Morning visit to Yamadera Temple — the mountain temple founded 1,100 years ago, climb 1,015 stone steps for panoramic valley views. Afternoon: journey to the magical Ginzan Onsen — a hot spring town of wooden ryokan lining a river, looking exactly like the bathhouse from Spirited Away. Evening: Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri — thousands of dancers in summer kimono perform with flower hats to the rhythm of taiko drums.
Day 6: Sendai Tanabata & Matsushima Bay
Journey to Sendai — Tohoku’s largest city. Morning: the Sendai Tanabata Festival — the largest Tanabata celebration in Japan, with thousands of enormous colorful paper streamers (fukinagashi) decorating shopping arcades. Afternoon: cruise Matsushima Bay — one of Japan’s Three Great Views, with 260 pine-covered islands scattered across a tranquil sea. Visit Zuiganji Temple, a national treasure with gilded sliding doors.
Day 7: Return to Tokyo
Morning visit to Sendai’s morning market. Bullet train return to Tokyo (90 minutes). Afternoon arrival in Tokyo. Transfer to airport or extend your stay.
