Day 1: Arrive Narsarsuaq — Gateway to South Greenland
Arrive at Narsarsuaq Airport — the former US WWII airbase turned Greenland’s southern gateway. Transfer to accommodation. Orientation walk around the settlement with views across the fjord to Flower Valley. Learn about the dramatic WWII history of Bluie West One. Overnight in Narsarsuaq.
Day 2: Qaqortoq — Greenland’s Most Beautiful Town
Morning boat transfer through the stunning Tunulliarfik Fjord to Qaqortoq — the largest town in South Greenland and its cultural capital. Explore the Stone & Man sculpture project with over 40 granite artworks carved directly into the town’s bedrock. Visit the Qaqortoq Museum housed in the town’s oldest building (1804). Afternoon walk through the colorful colonial houses to Lake Tasersuag. Evening at leisure enjoying South Greenland cuisine.
Day 3: Iceberg Cruise & Norse Ruins
Full-day boat excursion into the Tunulliarfik Fjord system. Navigate through fields of towering icebergs calved from the Greenland Ice Sheet — some the size of city blocks. Visit Igaliku — site of Garðar, the medieval Norse bishop’s seat with remarkably preserved ruins including the cathedral, stables, and farm buildings. Walk among wildflowers and grazing sheep in one of Greenland’s most picturesque settings.
Day 4: Hvalsey Church & Norse Heritage
Boat to Hvalsey (Qaqortukulooq) — home to the best-preserved Norse ruin in Greenland, the Hvalsey Church (built ~1300 AD). This is where the last recorded Norse event in Greenland took place — a wedding in 1408. Explore the remarkably intact stone walls. Continue to Narsaq for the night. Evening presentation on Viking Greenland and the mystery of the Norse disappearance.
Day 5: Narsaq & Qaleraliq Glacier
Explore Narsaq — a vibrant hunting and fishing community at the foot of stunning mountains. Visit the local fish market and craft workshops. Afternoon boat excursion to the Qaleraliq Glacier front — witness massive icebergs calving into the fjord. Optional short hike on the ice cap’s edge. Farewell dinner featuring Greenlandic specialties: musk ox, Arctic char, and local berries.
Day 6: Departure
Final morning in South Greenland. Transfer to Narsarsuaq Airport for departure, carrying memories of iceberg-filled fjords and 1,000-year-old Viking stories.
