Day 1: Arrive Malabo — Africa’s Spanish Soul
Welcome at Malabo International Airport. Your adventure in Africa’s only Spanish-speaking nation begins. Transfer to your hotel in the historic center. Afternoon walking tour: Independence Square, the magnificent neo-Gothic Santa Isabel Cathedral (built 1897-1916), the Presidential Palace compound, and the colonial-era administrative buildings that give Malabo its distinctive character — a piece of Spain transported to the Gulf of Guinea. Evening: welcome drinks at El Barco, the iconic ship-shaped casino on the waterfront, followed by dinner featuring Equatorial Guinea’s unique cuisine — pepesup (spicy fish soup), grilled plantains, and fresh Atlantic seafood. Overnight in Malabo.
Day 2: Malabo → Baney → Bilelipa → Pico Basile
Morning departure east along the coast road. Stop at Baney, a historic coastal town with Spanish mission-era architecture and sweeping ocean views. Continue to Bilelipa for a guided 1-hour rainforest hike to a stunning multi-tiered waterfall — swim in the crystal-clear pool beneath the cascade. After an early lunch, begin the spectacular drive up Pico Basile. The 3,011-meter volcano dominates the island. The road winds through cloud forest filled with endemic birds and orchids, emerging above the tree line into an otherworldly alpine zone. At the Santuario de la Virgen de Bisila (2,800m), stop for photos and reflection. At the summit (conditions permitting), witness panoramic views over the entire island, the Gulf of Guinea, and on clear days, Mount Cameroon 100km away. Sunset descent. Overnight in Malabo.
Day 3: Malabo → Moka Biodiversity Center → Arena Blanca Beach
Morning drive to Moka, home of the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program. Guided forest walk to observe the island’s extraordinary primates — the endangered drill monkey, Pennant’s red colobus, and black colobus are all found here and nowhere else on Earth. Learn about the conservation efforts protecting these species from bushmeat hunting. After lunch at a local restaurant, drive to Arena Blanca, a stunning stretch of white sand beach that defies expectations on this volcanic island. Afternoon: swimming, snorkeling at the reef edge, or simply relaxing with a coconut on one of the most beautiful beaches in Central Africa. Farewell dinner at a beachfront restaurant featuring grilled fish caught that morning. Overnight in Malabo.
Day 4: Depart Malabo
Morning at leisure — last walk through Malabo’s streets, final photos of the cathedral, last purchase of Equatoguinean chocolate (some of the finest in the world, grown on Bioko’s volcanic slopes). Transfer to the airport. Hasta luego.
