Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Nouakchott
Airport welcome. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon: visit Nouakchott’s Port de Peche — one of Africa’s most vibrant fishing harbors. Watch hundreds of painted pirogues return with the day’s catch, fish being auctioned on the beach, and the organized chaos of Mauritania’s maritime industry. Visit the National Museum for context on the country’s extraordinary history — from the Ghana Empire to the Almoravid dynasty. Evening: dinner of grilled capitaine (Nile perch) fresh from the Atlantic. Overnight in Nouakchott.
Day 2: Nouakchott → Atar → Terjit Oasis
Morning drive into the Sahara. The landscape transforms as you leave the coast behind — acacia scrub gives way to sand and rock. Stop at Akjoujt for Moroccan-style mint tea. Arrive in Atar, the capital of the Adrar region — a town of ochre-colored buildings and bustling markets. Afternoon: explore Terjit Oasis, a hidden canyon where a natural spring creates a palm-shaded paradise. Swim in the clear, warm water — an almost surreal experience in the middle of the Sahara. Overnight in Atar.
Day 3: Atar → Chinguetti — The Ancient City
Depart Atar for the 75-mile desert crossing to Chinguetti — one of the Sahara’s most iconic journeys. Your driver navigates by landmarks and instinct across the trackless sand. Arrive at Chinguetti, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Islam’s seven holy cities. Founded in 777 AD, Chinguetti was a major stop on trans-Saharan trade routes and a renowned center of learning. Visit the 13th-century stone mosque with its distinctive square minaret. Tour a family library where manuscripts — some dating to the 9th century — are preserved: illuminated Qur’ans, astronomical charts, and poetry. Afternoon camel trek into the dunes. Watch the sunset turn the Sahara into a sea of gold. Overnight in Chinguetti guesthouse.
Day 4: Chinguetti Dawn → Amogjar Pass → Nouakchott
Wake before dawn for sunrise over the dunes — the Sahara at its most transformative. After breakfast, begin the journey back south through dramatic desert scenery. Stop at Amogjar Pass to view prehistoric rock paintings — elephants, giraffes, and antelope from an era when the Sahara was green. Continue through ever-changing desert landscapes to Nouakchott. Evening: farewell dinner and reflection on your Sahara adventure. Overnight in Nouakchott.
Day 5: Departure
Morning at leisure — visit the crafts market for Mauritanian silver, leatherwork, and camel-wool rugs. Transfer to Nouakchott International Airport.
