Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Yaounde Arrival
Arrive in Yaounde. Evening briefing about the expedition ahead. Overnight at a centrally located hotel.
Day 2: Yaounde to Somalomo — Journey to the Dja
Drive south through Cameroon’s lush forest region to Somalomo, the gateway to the 5,260 km2 Dja Faunal Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Africa’s largest and best-protected rainforests. Meet your Ba’Aka community hosts. Evening introduction to traditional Pygmy culture with music and dance around the fire.
Day 3: Forest Trek with Ba’Aka Guides — Medicinal Plants & Hunting Traditions
Full day trekking with Ba’Aka guides who share their deep knowledge of the forest. Learn traditional hunting techniques (demonstration only), identify medicinal plants used for generations, and discover edible forest foods. The Ba’Aka’s remarkable ability to read the forest reveals wildlife few others can find — including signs of forest elephants and gorillas.
Day 4: Dja River Canoe Safari
Paddle the Dja River by traditional pirogue — one of Cameroon’s most pristine waterways. The river forms a natural boundary of the reserve, with dense primary forest rising on both banks. Excellent birdwatching with over 320 species recorded, including the rare grey-necked rockfowl. Chance to spot primates and forest elephants coming to drink.
Day 5: Ba’Aka Village Immersion
Spend the day with a Ba’Aka community near the reserve boundary. Participate in daily activities — traditional honey harvesting, mat and basket weaving, and food preparation. Learn about the challenges facing indigenous forest peoples and the community-based conservation efforts to protect both the forest and their traditional way of life.
Day 6: Return to Yaounde
Journey back to the capital. Afternoon visit to the Mvog Betsi Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Cameroon’s premier conservation education center.
Day 7: Departure
Transfer to Yaounde airport.
