Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Yaounde — Welcome to Africa in Miniature
Arrive at Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Cameroon’s capital, a city built across seven hills. Afternoon orientation walk through the city center, visiting the striking Reunification Monument and the National Museum housed in the former presidential palace. Welcome dinner featuring Cameroonian specialties — ndole (bitter leaf stew) and grilled fish.
Day 2: Yaounde to Yokadouma — Gateway to the Jungle
Early morning transfer east towards the Congo Basin. Journey through Cameroon’s diverse landscapes — from rolling savannah to dense equatorial rainforest. Yokadouma serves as the gateway to Lobeke National Park, part of the Tri-National Sangha conservation area (UNESCO World Heritage, shared with Congo and CAR). Overnight at a forest lodge.
Day 3-6: Lobeke National Park — Gorilla Trekking & Forest Elephants
Four full days in Lobeke. Rise early each morning to trek to designated observation watchtowers overlooking forest clearings (bais) where wildlife congregates. Lobeke is one of the best places in Central Africa to observe Western lowland gorillas in their natural habitat. Forest elephants, chimpanzees, bongos, and sitatungas are also frequently sighted. Between treks, learn about the conservation work protecting this pristine ecosystem and visit traditional Ba’Aka (Pygmy) villages to experience their forest culture.
Day 7-8: Congo Basin Rainforest Exploration
Continue exploring the deep rainforest with guided walks along elephant trails. Canoe excursions on the Sangha River — one of the Congo Basin’s major waterways — offer unique perspectives of the forest and opportunities to spot forest buffalo and numerous bird species. Evenings around the campfire with storytelling by local Ba’Aka guides.
Day 9: Yokadouma to Yaounde
Return journey from the forest to the capital. Stop at traditional villages en route to see bark cloth making and purchase local crafts.
Day 10: Yaounde Exploration
Full day in Yaounde: visit the vibrant Mfoundi Market, the Artisanat National craft center, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Victories. Enjoy lunch at a restaurant overlooking the city from Mont Febe.
