Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Ashgabat — The Marble City

Arrive at Ashgabat International Airport. Meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon tour of Ashgabat, the surreal capital holding the Guinness World Record for the highest concentration of white marble buildings — over 543 buildings clad in white marble across 4.5 million square meters. Visit the Neutrality Arch with its golden statue of the first president that rotates to face the sun, Independence Park, and the impressive Alem Cultural Center with its giant indoor Ferris wheel. Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 2: Ashgabat — Nissa & Spiritual Mosque

Morning visit to Old Nissa, the ancient capital of the Parthian Empire (UNESCO World Heritage), dating back to the 3rd century BC. Walk through the ruins of this fortress city where the Parthian kings once ruled a vast empire stretching from the Mediterranean to India. Afternoon visit to the Turkmenbashi Ruhy Mosque in Kipchak, the largest mosque in Central Asia, with the mausoleum of Turkmenistan’s first president. Visit the nearby family mausoleum. Drive to the outskirts and visit a traditional Akhal-Teke horse farm — these golden-coated horses are Turkmenistan’s national symbol and among the world’s oldest and most beautiful horse breeds. Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 3: Ashgabat to Darvaza — Gates of Hell

Morning visit to the Tolkuchka Bazaar (weekend only) — a vast open-air market where you can find everything from camels to carpets. Afternoon 4×4 drive into the Karakum Desert (approximately 4 hours). Watch the desert landscape transform as you leave civilization behind. Arrive at the Darvaza Gas Crater — the legendary “Gates of Hell.” This 70-meter-wide crater has been burning continuously since 1971 when Soviet geologists accidentally ignited a natural gas pocket. As darkness falls, gather at the crater’s edge to witness one of the most surreal sights on Earth — a burning pit of fire in the middle of an empty desert under a star-filled sky. Camp overnight in traditional Turkmen yurts near the crater. Barbecue dinner cooked over the crater’s heat.

Day 4: Darvaza to Ashgabat — Desert Sunrise & Departure

Wake before dawn to watch the sunrise over the burning crater — the morning light creates a dramatic interplay with the flames. Breakfast at camp. 4×4 drive back across the Karakum Desert to Ashgabat. Afternoon transfer to Ashgabat International Airport for departure, carrying the memory of one of the world’s most extraordinary natural phenomena.
