Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Iquitos — Into the Jungle
Arrive at Iquitos Airport. Transfer through this unique city — the world’s largest with no road access. Board a motorized boat at the port for the journey along the Amazon River to your jungle lodge. Watch Iquitos disappear as the rainforest engulfs both banks. Arrive at your riverside lodge and settle into your bungalow. Afternoon introductory jungle walk to orient yourself to the sights, sounds, and smells of the Amazon. Overnight at jungle lodge.
Day 2: Pink Dolphins & Amazon River Exploration
Early morning boat excursion to spot pink river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) as they surface in the calm morning waters. These magical creatures are the largest freshwater dolphins in the world and are revered in Amazonian folklore. Afternoon expedition through Jorge Caño, a narrow tributary where howler monkeys announce their territory. Visit a local Yagua indigenous community to see blowgun demonstrations and learn about their traditional lifestyle. Evening night safari — spotlight caimans and listen for the chorus of frogs and insects. Overnight at jungle lodge.
Day 3: Purura Lake & Giant Water Lilies
Full-day excursion to Purura Lake, a stunning oxbow lake deep in the jungle. Paddle canoes through the calm waters looking for giant river otters, anacondas sunning on branches, and colorful macaws flying overhead. Try your hand at piranha fishing. Afternoon visit to see the Victoria Regia (Victoria amazonica), the world’s largest water lily with leaves reaching 3 meters in diameter — strong enough to support a small child. Sunset over the lake as you return to the lodge. Overnight at jungle lodge.
Day 4: Canopy Walkway & Survival Skills
Morning trek to a canopy walkway suspended 35 meters above the forest floor. Walk among the treetops for a completely different perspective of the rainforest — this is where 90% of Amazon biodiversity lives. Spot toucans, parrots, and the flash of a blue morpho butterfly. Afternoon jungle survival workshop: your guide teaches you to make rope from tree bark, identify edible fruits and insects, find water in vines, and build a basic shelter. Farewell campfire dinner at the lodge. Overnight at jungle lodge.
Day 5: Return to Iquitos & Departure
Early morning birdwatching — the dawn chorus in the Amazon is an unforgettable symphony. After breakfast, boat transfer back to Iquitos. Visit the bustling Belen Market, an incredible floating marketplace where you can find everything from exotic fruits to traditional medicines. Transfer to Iquitos Airport for departure. Leave with a deep appreciation for the lungs of our planet.
