Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Uyuni — Train Cemetery — Colchani — Salt Flats
Arrive in Uyuni (either by overnight bus from La Paz or flight). Morning visit to the haunting Train Cemetery — rusting locomotives from the 19th-century mining boom, now one of Bolivia’s most photographed sites. Stop at Colchani village to see traditional salt processing. Then drive onto the Salar — the sensation of walking on what appears to be an endless white plain is hard to describe. Visit the Salt Hotel Museum (built entirely of salt blocks) and the Isla Incahuasi — a cactus-covered island rising from the salt flat with 360° views. Sunset photography on the salar — watch the sky explode in color over the white expanse. Overnight in a salt hotel on the edge of the flats (unforgettable experience — everything from walls to bed frames is made of salt).

Day 2: Salt Flats Sunrise — San Cristóbal — Valley of Rocks
Optional pre-dawn departure for sunrise on the salt flats — even more dramatic than sunset. Visit the Ojos del Salar (eyes of the salt flat) — bubbling vents where underground water surfaces. Drive south past San Cristóbal’s massive silver mine. Enter the Valley of Rocks (Valle de Rocas) — a landscape of bizarre volcanic rock formations sculpted by wind erosion into shapes resembling a surreal city. Continue to the Siloli Desert. Overnight at a basic refuge near the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve.

Day 3: Colored Lagoons — Laguna Colorada — Geysers
Drive through the high-altitude desert to the Colored Lagoons: Laguna Hedionda, Laguna Cañapa, and Laguna Chiarcota — each hosting flocks of flamingos feeding in mineral-rich waters. Arrive at the spectacular Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon) at 4,278m — its deep red color comes from algae and plankton, and it’s the primary breeding ground for thousands of James’s flamingos. Rise before dawn to reach Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon) at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano (5,916m) on the Chilean border. The lagoon’s emerald color comes from high concentrations of copper and arsenic minerals. Visit the Dali Valley (Valle de Dalí) — surreal rock formations that inspired Salvador Dalí’s paintings. Long return drive to Uyuni, passing through beautiful Andean landscapes. Arrive Uyuni in the late afternoon. Overnight in Uyuni town.

Day 5: Uyuni Departure
Morning at leisure to explore Uyuni town. Transfer to airport or bus station for onward travel — whether to La Paz, Sucre, or across the border to Chile’s Atacama Desert.
