Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Colombo — Negombo — Arrival
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport, where you’ll be greeted with a warm Sri Lankan welcome. Transfer to your beachfront hotel in Negombo (20 minutes). Spend the afternoon relaxing on the golden sands of Negombo Beach or exploring the Dutch-era canal system and the bustling fish market — Negombo is known as “Little Rome” for its concentration of Catholic churches. Welcome dinner featuring Sri Lankan rice and curry. Overnight in Negombo.

Day 2: Negombo — Anuradhapura — Sigiriya
After breakfast, drive inland to Anuradhapura (4 hours), Sri Lanka’s first capital and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Explore the sacred city’s highlights: the Sri Maha Bodhi tree (oldest documented tree on Earth, grown from a cutting of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment), the colossal Ruwanwelisaya dagoba, and the Jetavanaramaya — once the tallest brick structure in the world. Continue to Sigiriya region. Overnight near Sigiriya.

Day 3: Sigiriya Rock — Polonnaruwa
Early morning climb of Sigiriya Lion Rock — a 200m-high granite plateau rising dramatically from the jungle, crowned by the ruins of King Kashyapa’s 5th-century palace. Marvel at the famous “Heavenly Maidens” frescoes (surviving masterpieces of ancient Sinhalese art) and the Lion’s Paw terrace. After lunch, explore the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa — the Gal Vihara rock temple with its magnificent 14m reclining Buddha carved from a single granite block, royal palace ruins, and the audience hall with its elephant friezes. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Day 4: Dambulla Cave Temple — Spice Garden — Kandy
Morning visit to the Dambulla Cave Temple complex — five caves filled with over 150 Buddha statues and vibrant murals spanning 2,100 square meters, making it the best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. En route to Kandy, stop at a spice garden in Matale to learn about Sri Lanka’s famous spices — cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, and nutmeg. Arrive in Kandy in the late afternoon. Evening visit to the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), Buddhism’s holiest shrine, followed by a cultural show featuring traditional Kandyan dancers, drummers, and fire-walkers. Overnight in Kandy.

Day 5: Peradeniya Botanical Gardens — Nuwara Eliya (Tea Country)
Morning visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya — 147 acres of stunning tropical flora, including the famous orchid house and the avenue of royal palms planted by British governors. Then drive into the hill country to Nuwara Eliya (“Little England”), passing through endless tea plantations. Stop at a working tea factory to learn the full process from leaf to cup and enjoy a freshly brewed Ceylon tea. Stroll through Nuwara Eliya’s colonial-era town — Gregory Lake, the Hill Club, and Tudor-style cottages. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya — Ella Scenic Train — Yala Area
An early train journey from Nanu Oya to Ella (optional — one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world, passing through tunnels, over bridges, and past waterfalls and tea plantations). Alternatively, drive to Ella. Visit the iconic Nine Arch Bridge and hike Little Adam’s Peak for panoramic views. Afternoon descent from the hills to the Yala area. Overnight near Yala National Park.

Day 7: Yala Safari — South Coast
Early morning jeep safari in Yala National Park — Sri Lanka’s premier wildlife destination, boasting the highest leopard density in the world. Search for leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and an incredible array of birdlife (over 215 species). After the safari, drive to the south coast. Afternoon at leisure on the golden beaches of Mirissa or Unawatuna. Farewell seafood dinner by the ocean. Overnight on the south coast.

Day 8: Galle Fort — Colombo — Departure
Morning exploration of Galle Fort — a 17th-century Dutch fortified city and UNESCO World Heritage site. Walk the ramparts, visit the lighthouse, and explore the charming streets lined with colonial buildings, boutique cafes, and art galleries. Drive up the coastal highway back to Colombo (2 hours). Brief Colombo city tour including Galle Face Green, Gangaramaya Temple, and Independence Square. Transfer to airport for departure.
