From the iconic twin lakes of Sete Cidades to the geothermal wonderland of Furnas Valley, every day reveals another facet of this Portuguese Atlantic paradise.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival in Ponta Delgada
Upon arrival at João Paulo II Airport (PDL), you will be warmly greeted by our local representative and transferred to your comfortable hotel in Ponta Delgada, the charming capital of São Miguel. After check-in, the remainder of the day is yours to settle in and begin exploring. Take a leisurely stroll along the seaside promenade, admire the distinctive black-and-white basalt mosaic pavements of the historic center, and visit the 16th-century Fort of São Brás. In the evening, sample the local cuisine at one of the many restaurants serving fresh Atlantic seafood and the famous Azorean cheese. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.
Day 2 — Full-Day Shared Van Tour: Sete Cidades
After breakfast, embark on a full-day shared van tour to the legendary Sete Cidades, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. Your journey takes you along the winding mountain roads to the Vista do Rei viewpoint, where you will be treated to a panoramic view of the stunning twin lakes — one blue, one green — nestled within a massive volcanic crater. Legend says they were formed by the tears of a princess and a shepherd boy. Continue down into the crater to explore the tranquil village of Sete Cidades, walk along the lake shores, and visit the neo-Gothic Church of São Nicolau. Lunch at a local restaurant (own expense) before returning via the scenic north coast, passing through picturesque villages and lush pastures. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.
Day 3 — Full-Day Shared Van Tour: Furnas Valley
Today’s full-day excursion takes you to the geothermal heart of São Miguel: Furnas Valley. Your first stop is the Gorreana Tea Plantation, Europe’s oldest and only tea plantation, where you can stroll through the terraced tea fields and sample the locally grown green and black teas. Continue to the Furnas Lake area where you will witness the famous “Cozido das Furnas” — a traditional stew slow-cooked underground by volcanic steam. Visit the Terra Nostra Botanical Park, home to a magnificent thermal pool where you can bathe in the iron-rich, warm waters surrounded by a century-old botanical garden. Explore the bubbling caldeiras in the village center, where mineral water springs and fumaroles create an otherworldly landscape. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.
Day 4 — Half-Day Whale Watching Excursion
The Azores are one of the world’s premier whale watching destinations, with over 25 species of cetaceans recorded in these waters. This morning, board a specially equipped boat with experienced marine biologists for an unforgettable half-day whale watching excursion. Sperm whales, sei whales, and several dolphin species are commonly sighted. The knowledgeable crew provides fascinating commentary on marine life behavior and conservation. After the excursion, the afternoon is free for you to explore Ponta Delgada further — perhaps visit the Carlos Machado Museum, shop for local handicrafts at the Mercado da Graça, or simply relax at a waterfront café. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.
Day 5 — Free Day & Optional Activities
Today is yours to design as you wish. Relax at your hotel, explore more of Ponta Delgada, or book an optional excursion. Popular options include a trip to the northeast coast (Nordeste) — the most scenic and least visited part of the island — or a hike to Lagoa do Fogo, the pristine crater lake in the center of the island. You could also visit the pineapple plantations in Fajã de Baixo, where the famous Azorean pineapples are grown in glass greenhouses, or enjoy a thermal bath experience at the Caldeira Velha natural monument. Our local team is happy to assist with recommendations and bookings. Overnight in Ponta Delgada.
