Day 1: Arrive Anchorage — Alaska’s Urban Frontier

Land at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. Your Alaskan resident guide meets you. Anchorage is a city of 290,000 — home to 40% of all Alaskans — set between the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet, where moose occasionally wander downtown and floatplanes buzz the sky like taxis. Orientation drive through the city, then welcome dinner featuring Alaska’s legendary seafood: wild-caught salmon, halibut, and king crab legs. Your guide briefs you on the week’s adventure — Alaska demands flexibility, as weather, wildlife, and the sheer scale of the landscape can reshape any plan. Overnight in Anchorage.

Day 2: Matanuska Valley & Talkeetna — Gateway to Denali

Drive north through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, Alaska’s agricultural heartland, where 20-hour summer daylight produces record-breaking vegetables (90-pound cabbages at the State Fair). The views south reveal the Chugach Range; north, the Talkeetna Mountains. Arrive in Talkeetna, a quirky town of 1,200 at the confluence of three rivers. This was the base for the first successful Denali summit expedition in 1913, and its historic downtown — wooden boardwalks, a roadhouse from 1917, and the Fairview Inn — feels authentically Alaskan. Weather permitting, you get your first view of Denali (6,190m / 20,310 ft), North America’s highest peak, dominating the horizon. Overnight in Talkeetna.

Day 3: Denali National Park — The Great One

Enter Denali National Park, 6 million acres of subarctic wilderness preserving the Alaska Range. Only one road penetrates the park, and private vehicles are restricted after Mile 15 — you board a park transit bus for the journey into the interior. This is one of the world’s great wildlife drives. Look for grizzly bears digging for roots on open tundra, Dall sheep on the high ridges (their white dots visible against the green from miles away), caribou crossing braided rivers in their ancient migration routes, and — if you’re among the lucky 30% of visitors who see the mountain — Denali itself, the “Great One,” so massive it creates its own weather systems and is often shrouded in clouds while the rest of Alaska is sunny. The park road ends at Kantishna (Mile 92), surrounded by 360-degree mountain views. Evening: a ranger talk at your lodge deep in the park. Overnight in Denali.

Day 4: Denali Wilderness Day

Morning: choose your adventure — a guided tundra hike (the park has no trails beyond the entrance — you walk on the land itself), a flightseeing tour (optional, approximately $400) that circles Denali’s summit and lands on a glacier, or the ranger-led sled dog demonstration at park headquarters (Denali’s sled dogs are the only dogs still used for winter patrol in any U.S. national park). Afternoon: more wildlife viewing along the park road. The experience of Denali is not about checking off landmarks — it’s about the scale, the silence, and the knowledge that this ecosystem functions exactly as it did 10,000 years ago. Day 5: Alaska Railroad — Anchorage to Seward

Morning drive back to Anchorage, then board the Alaska Railroad’s Coastal Classic train for one of North America’s most scenic rail journeys. The train runs 114 miles along Turnagain Arm (named by Captain Cook in 1778 when he was “turned again” looking for the Northwest Passage), past beluga whales chasing salmon in the tidal flats, through the Kenai Mountains, and into the Chugach National Forest. Eagles perch on driftwood, glaciers appear around corners, and the train slows for photo-worthy views. Arrive in Seward, a fishing town on Resurrection Bay, with mountains plunging directly into the sea. Overnight in Seward.

Day 6: Kenai Fjords National Park — Glacier & Marine Wildlife Cruise

Full day aboard a Kenai Fjords cruise into Resurrection Bay and the Gulf of Alaska. This is Alaska at its most spectacular. The 750-square-mile Kenai Fjords National Park contains the Harding Icefield — 700 square miles of ice, a remnant of the Pleistocene — from which 38 named glaciers calve into the sea. Your captain navigates close to a tidewater glacier (often Holgate or Aialik), and you wait — the crack of ice breaking, the thunderous roar as a tower of blue ice collapses into the sea, creating waves that rock the boat. But the glaciers are only half the show. The marine wildlife is extraordinary: humpback whales bubble-net feeding, orcas patrolling the fjords, Steller sea lions hauled out on rocky islands (the largest sea lions in the world, males reaching 2,500 lbs), sea otters floating on their backs cracking open clams, puffins flying in comical formations, and bald eagles everywhere. Lunch is included — typically grilled salmon on deck with glacier views. Overnight in Seward.

Day 7: Seward to Anchorage — Departure

Morning: visit the Alaska SeaLife Center, Alaska’s only public aquarium and marine research facility, where you can see Steller sea lions and harbor seals up close and learn about the Exxon Valdez oil spill’s lasting impact. Then board the Alaska Railroad or drive back to Anchorage along the Seward Highway — one of America’s most scenic drives. Transfer to Anchorage Airport for departure. You leave with memories of the mountain that makes its own weather, glaciers that calve icebergs into the sea, and wilderness on a scale that exists nowhere else in the United States.
