Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Socotra — First Contact with Another World
Fly from Jeddah (or Abu Dhabi) to Socotra’s tiny airport in Hadibu. The approach itself is spectacular: the turquoise Arabian Sea gives way to a lunar landscape of limestone plateaus. Meet your local Socotri guide team. Transfer to your first camp. Afternoon: orientation walk to the Delisha Beach — pristine white sand stretching for kilometers, completely empty. Swim in water so clear it feels like floating in air. Watch the sunset paint the Hajhir Mountains in shades of gold and purple. Evening: traditional Socotri dinner of fresh fish, rice, and dates, followed by an introduction to the island’s extraordinary natural history — 90 million years of isolation have created a living museum where 37% of plant species and 90% of reptiles exist nowhere else on Earth. Overnight in beach camp.
Day 2: Dixam Plateau — The Dragon Blood Forest
Drive 4×4 into the Hajhir Mountains, ascending to the Dixam Plateau. The landscape transforms: suddenly you’re surrounded by dragon blood trees (Dracaena cinnabari) — the iconic umbrella-shaped trees that look like something from a Dr. Seuss book. Their name comes from the dark red resin they produce, valued since antiquity as medicine, dye, and incense. Walk through the forest — the trees, some over 500 years old, create an otherworldly canopy. At Shebahon viewpoint, the dragon blood forest stretches to the horizon against a backdrop of granite peaks. Visit a traditional Socotri village to learn about mountain life. Afternoon: drive to the Dirhur Canyon viewpoint. Overnight in mountain camp.
Day 3: Wadi Dirhur — Freshwater Canyon & Frankincense
Trek down into Wadi Dirhur, a green slash through the arid mountains. This perennial stream creates a microclimate where frankincense trees (Boswellia socotrana), cucumber trees (Dendrosicyos socotrana — the only arborescent member of the cucumber family), and countless endemic plants thrive. Swim in crystal-clear pools fed by mountain springs. This is Socotra’s Garden of Eden — a lush oasis surrounded by dramatic cliffs. Afternoon: visit a Socotri frankincense collector to learn the ancient art of harvesting this precious resin. Overnight in mountain camp.
Day 4: Homhil Protected Area — The Infinity Pool
Drive to Homhil, one of Socotra’s most magical places. Hike to the famous “infinity pool” — a natural rock pool perched on a cliff edge overlooking the Arabian Sea. Float in freshwater as you gaze over the coastal plain 500m below. Homhil is a botanical wonderland: giant desert roses (Adenium socotranum) with swollen trunks covered in pink flowers, bottle trees with their bizarre swollen bases, and carpets of succulents. This is the landscape that inspired the phrase “most alien-looking place on Earth.” Afternoon: descend to the northeastern coast. Overnight at Arher Beach camp.
Day 5: Arher — Giant Sand Dunes Meet the Sea
Dawn at Arher — one of the most photographed spots on Socotra. Massive white sand dunes cascade directly into the turquoise ocean. Climb the dunes (challenging but worth it) for views stretching from the Hajhir peaks to the endless Arabian Sea. Morning: explore the Arher freshwater spring that emerges at the base of the dunes — drink from a natural spring with one hand in the ocean. Afternoon: drive to Hoq Cave. Hike 45 minutes up a steep cliff path to the cave entrance — the effort is rewarded with one of the world’s most spectacular cave chambers, stretching 3km into the mountain. Inside, ancient stalactites, stalagmites, and 2,000-year-old inscriptions. Overnight at Arher camp.
Day 6: Detwah Lagoon — The Most Beautiful Place on Earth?
Drive to the western tip of Socotra. Arrive at Detwah Lagoon, regularly described as one of the most beautiful places on the planet — a perfect turquoise lagoon separated from the ocean by a narrow sand spit, fringed by white sand and backed by limestone cliffs. The colors are unreal. Morning: explore the lagoon by foot, spotting stingrays gliding through the shallows and Socotra cormorants diving for fish. Afternoon: Qalansiyah Beach — a crescent of perfect sand with calm, clear waters. Swim with spinner dolphins that frequent the bay. Late afternoon: climb the cliffs for the classic Detwah viewpoint photograph. Overnight at Detwah camp.
Day 7: Shuab Beach & Qalansiyah
Morning boat trip from Qalansiyah along the dramatic coastline to Shuab Beach — accessible only by boat. This remote cove is where green sea turtles nest and the snorkeling rivals any tropical destination. Snorkel over vibrant coral gardens teeming with parrotfish, butterflyfish, and if lucky, reef sharks. Picnic on the beach. Return to Qalansiyah for the afternoon. Visit the fishing harbor to see the day’s catch — Socotri fishermen still use traditional dhows. Farewell dinner: freshly grilled lobster, fish, and traditional Socotri bread. Overnight at Hadibu camp.
Day 8: Depart Socotra
Morning at Hadibu. Visit the Socotra market — frankincense, myrrh, dragon blood resin, and local honey. Transfer to airport. Fly out over the island you’ll never forget.
