Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Douala — Atlantic Gateway
Arrival and Douala city tour. Visit Bonanjo administrative quarter, Akwa’s vibrant markets, and the Doual’art contemporary art space. Welcome dinner of grilled fish with miondo (fermented cassava). Overnight in Douala.
Day 2: Bandjoun — Bamileke Royal Traditions
Travel to Bandjoun, one of Cameroon’s most important Bamileke chiefdoms. Visit the Chief’s Palace — a magnificent complex of carved wooden pillars, thatched conical roofs, and the sacred forest. The chief’s museum displays royal regalia including elaborate beaded thrones, leopard-skin regalia, and ancestor figures. Witness traditional Bamileke dances if a ceremony is taking place. Overnight in Bafoussam.
Day 3: Foumban — Bamoun Sultanate
Full day in Foumban. Morning: Sultan’s Palace and Museum — centuries of Bamoun history through artifacts, manuscripts, and the remarkable Shumom script invented by Sultan Njoya. Visit the Rue des Artisans where coppersmiths, weavers, carvers, and beadworkers practice their crafts. Afternoon: the Royal School where the Sultan’s script is still taught. Evening: traditional Bamoun music performance. Overnight in Foumban.
Day 4: Dschang — Museum & Highlands
Visit Dschang’s Museum of Civilizations for a comprehensive journey through Cameroon’s 250+ ethnic groups. Afternoon: explore the Dschang escarpment with stunning views over the Noun plain. Visit a coffee plantation to learn about Cameroon’s Arabica production. Overnight in Dschang.
Day 5: Buea — Colonial History & Mount Cameroon
Travel to Buea, the former German colonial capital perched on Mount Cameroon’s slopes. Visit the Bismarck Fountain, the German colonial headquarters (now the Prime Minister’s lodge), and the old Presbyterian church. Afternoon: hike on Mount Cameroon’s lower slopes through tea plantations. Overnight in Buea.
Day 6: Limbe — Coastal Culture
Full day in Limbe. Visit the Botanic Garden, Limbe Wildlife Centre, and Bakingili lava flow site. Afternoon: Limbe’s fishing beach — watch the colorful pirogues return with the day’s catch and visit the smoking sheds where fish is prepared traditional style. Evening: beachfront seafood dinner. Overnight in Limbe.
Day 7: Depart Douala
Return to Douala. Visit the artisan market for last souvenirs. Airport transfer.
