Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Luanda — Africa’s Most Expensive City

Land at Luanda’s modern international airport. Transfer to hotel along the Marginal (seafront promenade). Afternoon orientation: visit the Fortress of São Miguel (1575) — Angola’s oldest building — with its museum of the independence struggle and stunning bay views. Visit the Iron Palace (Palácio de Ferro), a wrought-iron building supposedly designed by Gustave Eiffel. Evening: dinner at Ilha de Luanda, the city’s restaurant island. Overnight in Luanda.

Day 2: Luanda City — History, Art & the Mausoleum

Full city tour. Visit the National Museum of Anthropology for Angola’s rich cultural heritage. See the Mausoleum of Agostinho Neto, Angola’s first president — a towering Soviet-style monument. Explore the lively Benfica Market for crafts and the Kissama souvenir market. Afternoon: the Miradouro da Lua (Viewpoint of the Moon) — a spectacular eroded canyon landscape of multicolored cliffs resembling a lunar surface, just 40km south of Luanda. Overnight in Luanda.

Day 3: Kissama National Park — Safari by the Atlantic

Full-day safari in Quiçama (Kissama) National Park, 75km south of Luanda. This 9,600 km² park is Angola’s premier wildlife destination, undergoing remarkable restoration. Game drive to spot elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, and if lucky, the rare giant sable antelope (palanca negra gigante) — Angola’s national symbol, thought extinct until rediscovered in 2004. Picnic lunch on the Kwanza River. Overnight at Kissama lodge or return to Luanda.

Day 4: Kalandula Falls — Africa’s Second Largest Waterfall

Fly or drive to Malanje province. Visit the magnificent Kalandula Falls on the Lucala River — at 105m high and 400m wide, they’re Africa’s second-largest by volume after Victoria Falls! The thunderous cascade surrounded by lush miombo woodland is one of Africa’s least-visited natural wonders. Hike to viewpoints, photograph rainbows in the spray, and feel the ground tremor beneath your feet. Afternoon: visit the Pedras Negras (Black Rocks) of Pungo Andongo — mysterious giant boulders scattered across the savanna, associated with Queen Nzinga legends. Overnight in Malanje.

Days 5-7: Lubango & the Serra da Leba

Fly to Lubango, Angola’s second city in the cool Huíla highlands. Visit the iconic Cristo Rei statue overlooking the city (reminiscent of Rio). Day 6: drive the spectacular Serra da Leba mountain pass — one of Africa’s most dramatic roads, with hairpin bends descending 1,800m. Visit Tundavala Gap — a sheer 1,000m escarpment with views stretching to Namibia. Day 7: meet the Mumuíla and Muhacaona peoples, semi-nomadic pastoralists known for their distinctive hairstyles, ochre body paint, and ornate beadwork. Overnight in Lubango.

Days 8-9: Namibe Desert — Where Dunes Meet the Atlantic

Drive to Namibe province. Explore the Namibe Desert, one of the world’s oldest deserts. Visit the Welwitschia mirabilis plants — bizarre living fossils over 1,000 years old, found only in the Namib Desert. Walk the stunning dunes at Praia Morena. Visit the fishing port of Tombwa and the old colonial architecture of Moçâmedes (Namibe city). Overnight in Namibe.

Day 10: Return to Luanda

Flight back to Luanda. Afternoon at leisure on Mussulo Beach — a 30km sand spit with calm, warm waters. Farewell dinner at a top Luanda restaurant. Overnight in Luanda.

Day 11: Depart Luanda

Airport transfer. Adeus, Angola — you’ve discovered one of Africa’s last true frontiers.
