Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Cap-Haïtien — Haiti’s Second City
Land at Cap-Haïtien International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation: walking tour of Cap-Haïtien — the former colonial capital of Saint-Domingue, once the wealthiest colony in the world. Visit the Cap-Haïtien Cathedral on the Place d’Armes, the iron Marché de Fer (Iron Market), and the colonial architecture along Boulevard du Cap-Haïtien. Visit the Vertières battlefield monument — the site of the final battle of the Haitian Revolution (November 18, 1803), where Haitian forces defeated Napoleon’s army, leading to Haiti becoming the world’s first Black republic and the second independent nation in the Americas. Evening: dinner at Lakay Restaurant for griot (marinated fried pork) with pikliz (spicy pickled slaw) and diri ak djon djon (rice with black mushrooms). Overnight in Cap-Haïtien.
Day 2: The Citadelle Laferrière — Eighth Wonder of the World
Full-day excursion to the Citadelle Laferrière (UNESCO World Heritage), the largest fortress in the Americas and one of the most extraordinary military structures ever built. Constructed between 1805-1820 under King Henri Christophe, the Citadelle sits atop the 900m Bonnet à l’Evêque mountain — its walls rise 40m from the mountaintop, with 365 cannons (one for each day of the year), and its fortifications encompass 10,000 m². The approach is itself an experience — travel by 4×4, then ascend on foot or horseback through tropical vegetation to the fortress emerging from the clouds like a stone ship on a green sea. Once inside: explore the cannon galleries (some cannons still bear the insignia of European monarchs — captured from colonial powers), the massive cisterns, the royal quarters, and the panoramic ramparts with views stretching to the Atlantic Ocean and, on clear days, to Cuba 90km away. The sheer scale, ambition, and historical significance of the Citadelle — built by a formerly enslaved people to defend their hard-won freedom — is profoundly moving. Day 3: Sans Souci Palace & Milot — The Versailles of the Caribbean
Visit Milot village and the ruins of Sans Souci Palace (UNESCO), King Henri Christophe’s royal residence. Built 1810-1813, Sans Souci (“without worry”) was the most ambitious palace in the Western Hemisphere at the time — a neoclassical masterpiece with grand staircases, baroque fountains, and lavish reception halls. Though devastated by the 1842 earthquake, it remains one of the most evocative ruins in the Americas — arches standing against the sky, massive walls embracing the tropical gardens, and the mountain with the Citadelle towering behind. Walk through the Queen’s apartments, the Council of State chamber, the royal chapel, and the gardens where King Henri once entertained with the finest European luxuries (his court had rigid etiquette modeled on Versailles). Afternoon: visit the local artisan community in Milot — see metalwork artists creating beautiful sculptures from recycled oil drums (fer découpé), Haiti’s signature art form. Overnight in Cap-Haïtien.
Day 4: Labadee & Coastal Culture — Beaches, Markets & Rhum
Morning: boat trip along the northern coast to Labadee — a stunning stretch of white sand beaches backed by green mountains. Swim, snorkel on the coral reef, and relax. Visit the fishing village of Labadee to see traditional wooden boats and the daily catch. Afternoon: return to Cap-Haïtien. Visit a local rhum distillery — Haiti produces some of the finest rhum agricole in the Caribbean, made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses. Taste aged rhums and learn the production process. Evening: explore the Cap-Haïtien art galleries — Haiti has one of the world’s richest artistic traditions, from the vibrant canvases of the Saint Soleil school to the intricate Vodou flags (drapo Vodou) made of sequins and beads. Day 5: Depart Cap-Haïtien
