Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Khartoum
Airport transfer. Afternoon: Nile confluence, National Museum. Overnight in Khartoum.
Day 2: Khartoum & Omdurman
Khalifa’s House Museum, Mahdi’s Tomb, Omdurman Souq, and (Fridays) the Sufi dervish ceremony at Hamed al-Nil Mosque. Overnight in Khartoum.
Days 3-4: Meroe Pyramids, Naqa & Musawwarat
Drive to Meroe. Explore the Royal Pyramids (200+ pyramids at sunset and sunrise), Royal Baths, and Temple of Apedemak. Day 4: Naqa (Lion Temple and Roman Kiosk) and Musawwarat es-Sufra (the Great Enclosure). Camp at Meroe under the desert stars.
Days 5-6: Old Dongola & Nubian Villages
Drive to Old Dongola — medieval capital of Christian Makuria. Explore the Throne Hall, churches with 9th-century frescoes, and traditional Nubian villages along the Nile. Sail the Nile by felucca between villages.
Days 7-8: Jebel Barkal & the Holy Mountain
Drive to Karima. Jebel Barkal — the sacred flat-topped mountain believed by Egyptians and Kushites to be the home of Amun. Temples and pyramids at its base, including the painted chambers of the Barkal pyramids. Visit the Nuri pyramids and the royal cemetery of Kushite kings. Felucca cruise on the Nile at sunset.
Day 9: Soleb Temple — Amenhotep III’s Masterpiece
Drive to Soleb Temple on the west bank of the Nile — built by Pharaoh Amenhotep III and often called the most beautiful temple in Sudan. Its colonnaded halls and reliefs stand in splendid isolation. Return to Karima.
Day 10: Return to Khartoum — Departure
Drive to Khartoum. Farewell along the Nile corniche. Airport transfer.
