Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Tripoli
Airport meet & greet. Afternoon: Tripoli Medina exploration — Red Castle Museum, Arch of Marcus Aurelius, Gurgi Mosque, and the gold souq. Welcome dinner in the old city. Overnight in Tripoli.
Day 2: Leptis Magna — The Emperor’s City
Full day at Leptis Magna, Rome’s greatest ruins in Africa. Explore the Severan Forum, basilica, amphitheatre (16,000 seats), Hadrianic Baths with original mosaics, the colonnaded Cardo Maximus, and the harbor. Lunch by the Mediterranean at the ancient port. Return to Tripoli.
Day 3: Sabratha & Jebel Nafusa
Morning: Sabratha — the stunning 3-story Roman theatre facing the sea, exquisite mosaics, Temple of Isis, Byzantine churches. Afternoon: drive into the Berber Jebel Nafusa mountains — Nalut’s troglodyte village and cliffside ghorfas (fortified granaries). Overnight in the mountains.
Day 4: Ghadames — Pearl of the Sahara
Full-day drive to Ghadames (or flight). Explore the UNESCO-listed old city — covered alleyways, rooftop walkways, geometric decorations — a perfectly preserved medieval Saharan trading town. Evening: Tuareg tea ceremony and bread-baking in the dunes. Overnight in Ghadames.
Day 5: Flight to Benghazi — Cyrenaica
Return to Tripoli, then domestic flight to Benghazi. Afternoon: Benghazi orientation — the Italian colonial architecture, the seafront corniche, and the February 17 Martyrs’ Square. Overnight in Benghazi.
Day 6: Cyrene — The Greek Pentapolis
Full day at Cyrene (200km east of Benghazi) — a 7th-century BC Greek colony perched on a hilltop overlooking the Mediterranean. The Temple of Zeus — larger than the Parthenon in Athens — still dominates the site. Walk the Sacred Way past the Temple of Apollo, the Greek theatre, the Roman baths with their mosaic of the Three Graces, and the necropolis with thousands of rock-cut tombs. Visit Apollonia, Cyrene’s ancient port, with its submerged Roman ruins visible through crystal-clear water. Overnight near Cyrene.
Day 7: Qasr Libya & Return to Tripoli
Morning: Qasr Libya — a Byzantine church with 50 stunning 6th-century mosaic panels depicting animals, hunting scenes, and the Pharos of Alexandria, among the finest Byzantine mosaics in North Africa. Flight to Tripoli. Overnight in Tripoli.
Day 8: Tripoli Deep Dive
Morning: National Archives, the Italian colonial district, and the modern art gallery. Afternoon: traditional Libyan hammam experience (optional). Evening: farewell dinner at the Tripoli corniche. Overnight in Tripoli.
