Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Poprad — Gateway to the Tatras
Arrive at Poprad-Tatry Airport or train station (accessible from Bratislava, Krakow, or Budapest). Transfer to your accommodation in the High Tatras region — dotted with traditional mountain villages like Stary Smokovec and Strbske Pleso. Afternoon: gentle orientation walk around Strbske Pleso — the Tatras’ most famous glacial lake at 1,346m, surrounded by dwarf pine with the peaks of the High Tatras reflected in its crystal waters. The lake is 20m deep and has been a mountain resort since 1872. Welcome dinner with traditional Slovak food at a koliba (mountain hut restaurant). Overnight in hotel at the base of the Tatras.
Day 2: Trek Start — Velka Studena Valley & Teryho Chata
Begin your hut-to-hut journey. Morning: hike into the Velka Studena dolina (Great Cold Valley) — one of the most dramatic glacial valleys in the Tatras, carved by Ice Age glaciers. The trail climbs through dwarf pine zone into alpine meadows, with waterfalls cascading from hanging valleys above. After 4-5 hours of hiking (700m ascent), reach Teryho Chata (Tery’s Hut, 2,015m) — Slovakia’s highest mountain hut, perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop with 360-degree views. Named after Dr. Edmund Tery, a pioneering Tatra mountaineer. This is where you’ll experience true mountain hut culture: communal dinners, banter with Slovak and Polish hikers, and the most spectacular sunset you’ll ever see from a hut. Overnight at Teryho Chata.
Day 3: Priecone Sedlo — The High Pass & Zbojnicka Chata
Today’s highlight: crossing the Priecone sedlo (2,352m) — one of the most spectacular high passes in the Tatras, with chains bolted to the rock for security. The ascent rewards you with views of the entire High Tatras range: Gerlachovsky stit (2,655m, Slovakia’s highest), Lomnicky stit (2,634m, with its cable car station), and the Polish Tatras beyond. Descend into the Velka Zmrzla dolina (Great Frozen Valley) — the name comes from the patches of snow that survive year-round in its upper cirques. Arrive at Zbojnicka Chata (Brigand’s Hut, 1,960m) — named after the legendary Tatra brigands who used the mountains as hideouts. The hut serves delicious bryndzove halusky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese and bacon — Slovakia’s national dish). Overnight at Zbojnicka Chata.
Day 4: Slovak Paradise National Park — The Ladders & Gorges
Descend from the High Tatras and transfer to Slovak Paradise National Park — a dramatically different alpine landscape of deep river gorges, waterfalls, and limestone canyons. This is the “adventure playground” of Slovakia: trails that climb wooden ladders alongside waterfalls, walkways bolted to cliff faces, and chains to hold as you navigate narrow gorges. Hike the Sucha Bela gorge — a 3-hour route through a narrow limestone canyon where you climb ladders, step across wooden platforms above rushing water, and emerge at a viewpoint over the entire national park. This is one of Europe’s most unique hiking experiences. Continue to the Dobsinska Ice Cave (UNESCO) — one of the world’s largest ice caves, with ice formations up to 26.5m thick. Overnight in Slovak Paradise.
Day 5: Return to High Tatras — Mala Studena Valley & Zamkovskeho Chata
Return to the High Tatras for a final day of alpine hiking. Trek into the Mala Studena dolina (Little Cold Valley) to Zamkovskeho Chata (1,475m) — one of the oldest mountain huts in the Tatras, built in 1893. This is a gentler day of hiking (3-4 hours, 400m ascent) through pine forest and alpine meadow, with the Tatra peaks towering above. Afternoon: optional hike to the waterfall of Studeny Potok (Cold Stream) — a spectacular cascade in a narrow ravine. Final night celebration with Slovak mountain cuisine and local Tatratea (herbal tea liqueur). Overnight in hotel at the Tatras base.
Day 6: Morskie Oko (Optional) & Departure
Morning: optional visit to Morskie Oko (Eye of the Sea) on the Polish side of the Tatras — the largest and most beautiful lake in the entire Tatra range. Alternatively, take the cable car to Lomnicky stit (2,634m) for one final panoramic view of the Carpathians from Slovakia’s second-highest peak. Transfer to Poprad for departure.
