Itinerary Highlights

Day 1-2: Accra & Cape Coast — Ghana’s Heart & History

Arrive in Accra, Ghana’s vibrant capital. Tour the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the historic Jamestown fishing district. Day 2: the powerful confrontation with history at Cape Coast Castle — dungeons, the Door of No Return, and the museum documenting four centuries of the transatlantic slave trade. Afternoon at Elmina Castle (1482), the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa, dramatically positioned on the Atlantic shore.

Day 3-4: Kumasi — Ashanti Kingdom & Craft Villages

Journey to Kumasi, heart of the Ashanti Empire. Manhyia Palace Museum reveals the story of Africa’s most powerful pre-colonial kingdom. Visit Bonwire to watch kente cloth being hand-woven on traditional looms — patterns so complex they encode entire histories — and Ntonso for adinkra symbol printing.

Day 5-6: Lomé & Voodoo — Cross into Togo

Drive east into Togo. Lomé: the Akodessewa Fetish Market, the world’s largest — a functioning spiritual marketplace of animal skulls, carved deities, and ritual objects used by West Africa’s traditional healers. Walk the palm-lined boulevards of the former German colonial capital and experience Togolese cuisine (pâte with peanut sauce, grilled fish from the Gulf).

Day 7-8: Ouidah, Benin — The Soul of Voodoo

Cross into Benin. Two days in Ouidah: Python Temple (sacred pythons roam freely), Sacred Forest of Kpassè, and the powerful Slave Route — 4 km of memorials ending at the Door of No Return arch on the Atlantic. If timing permits, witness a voodoo ceremony — drumming, chanting, and the appearance of spirits through possession. Afternoon in Cotonou: Dantokpa Market and the artisan village.

Day 9-10: Ganvie Lake Village & Departure

Day trip to Ganvie, the remarkable 30,000-person stilt village on Lake Nokoué — founded as refuge from slave raiders, now a UNESCO World Heritage nominee. Float through the canals among homes, markets, and churches all on stilts. Return to Cotonou for farewell dinner and Day 10 departure.
