Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Siem Reap — Countryside Warm-Up Ride

Arrive Siem Reap. Late afternoon warm-up ride (10km) through the countryside south of town — the perfect introduction to cycling in Cambodia. Pedal past rice paddies where farmers in conical hats transplant seedlings, past water buffalo cooling in mud wallows, past village pagodas with their golden spires catching the late sun, and past lines of children cycling home from school in their crisp white-and-blue uniforms, all shouting enthusiastic “Hellos!” Your guide (an experienced cycling leader) ensures you’re comfortable with your Trek or Giant mountain bike. Stop at a rural market to sample fresh pineapple and sticky rice snacks — the sugar of the tropical fruit is the perfect fuel. Sunset over the rice fields. Welcome dinner. Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 2: Angkor Wat Sunrise — Grand Circuit by Bike (35km)

Pre-dawn start — cycle to Angkor Wat in the dark, using bike lights, arriving in time to secure a position by the reflecting pool for sunrise. After the sky show and temple exploration, continue your ride through the Angkor complex — the advantage of cycling is immediate: you cover more ground than walking, see more than from a vehicle, and feel the breeze on your face as you pedal the ancient causeways.

Morning route: Angkor Wat → South Gate of Angkor Thom → Bayon (park your bike and explore the 216 faces) → Terrace of Elephants → Victory Gate (cycle through this eastern gate of Angkor Thom). Continue to: Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda (small, beautifully restored 12th-century temples, often deserted), Ta Keo (the unfinished mountain-temple), and Ta Prohm (park your bikes and explore the Tomb Raider temple). Picnic lunch near Srah Srang (the Royal Bathing Pool).

Afternoon loop: Banteay Kdei → Pre Rup → East Mebon (the elephant statues) → Ta Som (the gate consumed by a strangler fig) → Preah Khan (cycle through the forest paths connecting these temples — you’ll pass monks in orange robes walking the same trails). Return to Siem Reap the back way via the north gate of Angkor Thom (a quieter entrance with fewer visitors). Total: 35km. Evening at leisure — your legs will feel the day, but the memories of temples and trails will outweigh the fatigue. Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 3: Banteay Srei & Countryside Cycling (40km)

Morning: cycle from Siem Reap to Banteay Srei (37km each way — today’s longer ride, but flat and scenic). The route follows rural roads through villages that see few tourists, past fields of cassava and corn, past sugar palm trees ( Cambodia’s national tree — the sap is tapped for sugar, the leaves woven into roofs and walls, the trunk used for construction, truly the tree that provides everything). Stop at village workshops where families make palm sugar — boiling the sap over wood fires until it crystallizes. Arrive at Banteay Srei by late morning — explore the pink sandstone carvings, described as Khmer art’s finest.

Afternoon: visit the Cambodia Landmine Museum, then cycle the back roads through the Phnom Kulen foothills to Banteay Samre (a 12th-century temple with excellent carvings, well-restored and usually completely empty). Return to Siem Reap the long way through lotus farms and vegetable gardens. Support vehicle always nearby with cold water, fresh fruit, and spare tubes. Total: 40km. Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 4: Floating Villages & Rural Villages by Bike (25km)

Morning: cycle southeast to the Tonle Sap Lake area (15km from Siem Reap), then board a boat to explore the floating villages of Chong Kneas. After the boat trip, continue cycling through fishing communities along the lake’s edge — the landscape here changes dramatically between wet and dry seasons. During dry season (December-May), you cycle on roads that are lakebed in wet season, passing fields of lotus flowers and stilt houses standing 8m above the ground. Lunch at a floating restaurant — fresh Tonle Sap fish, the lake that provides 60% of Cambodia’s protein intake. Afternoon: return to Siem Reap, with stops at lotus farms and a Buddhist pagoda where you can receive a blessing from the monks. Total cycling: 25km. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 5: Morning Ride — Departure

Optional early morning ride (10km) for dedicated cyclists: a circuit through villages west of Siem Reap as the sun rises and the country wakes up — monks on their alms rounds receiving offerings of rice from kneeling villagers, roosters crowing, the smell of wood fires starting the day’s cooking. It’s the quiet Cambodia that tour buses never see. Return for breakfast, then transfer to the airport. Your bike, now a friend, is returned to the shop — but the rhythm of the pedals, the temple views, and the endless “Hellos” from Cambodian children will stay with you.
