Day 1: Arrive Kotor — The Bay of Legends

Arrive Tivat or Podgorica Airport. Private transfer to Kotor along the stunning Bay of Kotor. The bay’s intricate geography — four connected bays within a single fjord-like inlet — has earned it UNESCO status. Check into your hotel in the Old Town. Afternoon orientation walk through Kotor’s labyrinth: the 12th-century Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, the Maritime Museum housed in an 18th-century baroque palace, and the curious “cats of Kotor” — the city’s unofficial mascots, celebrated with a Cat Museum and countless feline residents. Evening: sunset cruise on the bay, watching the mountains turn gold and purple as the sun drops behind the Lovcen massif. Overnight in Kotor.

Day 2: The Coast — Perast, Risan & Lustica Peninsula

Morning visit to Perast, Montenegro’s most beautiful baroque town. The 55-meter campanile of St. Nicholas Church dominates the waterfront. Boat to Our Lady of the Rocks islet. Continue to Risan, the oldest settlement in the bay, founded by Illyrians in the 3rd century BCE. The Roman mosaics of Villa Urbana (2nd century CE) depict Hypnos, the god of sleep — remarkably well-preserved geometric and mythological floor mosaics. Afternoon: explore the Lustica Peninsula on the open Adriatic side. The Blue Cave (Plava Spilja) is accessible by boat — sunlight reflects off the sandy bottom through the water, filling the cave with ethereal blue light. Swim stops at hidden coves along the peninsula. Evening return to Kotor. Overnight in Kotor.

Day 3: Lovcen National Park & Cetinje — The Soul of Montenegro

Morning: ascend the serpentine road from Kotor to Lovcen National Park (25 hairpin turns climbing 1,200 meters in 20 kilometers). Visit Njegos Mausoleum at the summit of Jezerski Vrh (1,660m). The black granite mausoleum houses a 28-ton marble statue of Petar II Petrovic Njegos beneath a golden mosaic ceiling depicting 200,000 tiles. Njegos chose this peak as his resting place himself — “Here, I want to be laid, embraced by Montenegrin stone, under the eternal sky.” Continue to Cetinje, Montenegro’s historic royal capital. Visit the Cetinje Monastery (1701), which houses the right hand of John the Baptist and a fragment of the True Cross — the most important Orthodox relics in the Balkans. The National Museum in the former Royal Palace of King Nikola I exhibits the country’s turbulent journey from principality to kingdom to part of Yugoslavia. Overnight in Cetinje.

Day 4: Cetinje to Durmitor — Via Ostrog Monastery

Morning drive 2 hours to Ostrog Monastery — one of the most extraordinary pilgrimage sites in the Orthodox world. The upper monastery is carved directly into a vertical cliff face 900 meters above the Zeta Valley. Founded in the 17th century by Saint Basil of Ostrog, his body lies in a small cave-chapel, uncorrupted according to the faithful. Pilgrims from all faiths (Christian, Muslim, and atheist alike) come seeking miracles. The view from the monastery terrace over the Bjelopavlici plain is surreal. Continue 2 hours north to Zabljak, the gateway to Durmitor National Park at 1,450 meters — the highest town in the Balkans. Afternoon orientation walk around Black Lake (Crno Jezero), a glacial lake at the base of the Durmitor massif. Overnight in Zabljak.

Day 5: Durmitor National Park — The Black Mountain

Full day in Durmitor National Park (UNESCO World Heritage). Durmitor is the heart of the massif after which Montenegro is named (Crna Gora = Black Mountain) — a landscape of 48 peaks above 2,000 meters, 18 glacial lakes, and Europe’s deepest canyon. Morning hike to Curevac viewpoint (1,625m) overlooking the Tara River Canyon — at 1,300 meters deep, it’s the deepest canyon in Europe (deeper than the Grand Canyon at its measurement point). The view is staggering: the emerald Tara River cuts through vertical limestone walls dwarfed by the Durmitor peaks behind. Afternoon options: zip-line across the Tara Canyon (the longest in Europe at 824m) or rafting on the Tara River (Class II-III rapids through the deepest sections). Evening: traditional Montenegrin mountain dinner — kacamak (polenta with cheese and cream), lamb under the sac (baked under a metal dome covered in coals), and locally distilled rakija. Overnight in Zabljak.

Day 6: Biogradska Gora & Lake Skadar

Morning drive 1.5 hours to Biogradska Gora National Park — one of Europe’s last three primeval forests, protected since 1878 when Prince Nikola was so moved by the beauty that he declared it a protected area (an almost unthinkably progressive act for a 19th-century Balkan ruler). Walk among 500-year-old trees — Norway spruce, beech, and fir reaching 60 meters — in a forest that has never been logged. The centerpiece is Biogradsko Lake, a glacial lake whose waters are so still that the surrounding forest is mirrored perfectly. Afternoon: drive south to Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans (shared with Albania). Take a boat through the lily pads and reed beds to see Dalmatian pelicans and pygmy cormorants. Visit a family-run winery on the lake shore for Crmnicko Vranac — the region’s signature bold red wine. Evening: sunset over the lake with the Albanian Alps in the distance. Overnight in Virpazar, on the shore of Lake Skadar.

Day 7: Return & Departure

Morning boat trip on Lake Skadar to the 14th-century Lesendro Fortress and the island monasteries of Starcevo and Beska. Afternoon transfer to Podgorica or Tivat Airport for departure.
