Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Leticia — The Amazon Triple Frontier
Fly into Leticia, the southernmost city in Colombia, situated on the Amazon River where Colombia, Brazil, and Peru meet. The flight path over uninterrupted green canopy is your first taste of the Amazon’s scale. The air is thick with humidity and the smell of vegetation. Afternoon: boat to your jungle lodge on the Amazon River. The mighty river is 2km wide here, dotted with islands, its brown waters carrying sediment from the Andes. Welcome briefing with your indigenous guide (Ticuna, Yucuna, or Huitoto community). Night walk: the jungle after dark is a different universe — eyeshine of caimans on the water, the phosphorescent glow of bioluminescent fungi, and the constant soundscape of frogs, insects, and nocturnal birds. Overnight at the jungle lodge.
Day 2: Amacayacu National Park — Pink River Dolphins
Dawn canoe excursion: the river at first light is mystical — mist rising from the water, howler monkeys roaring in the distance (their calls travel 5km). Visit Amacayacu National Park, 293,500 hectares of pristine rainforest. Morning jungle trek: your guide identifies medicinal plants (the Amazon is Earth’s largest pharmacy — 25% of modern pharmaceuticals originated from rainforest plants), demonstrates blowgun techniques (Ticuna hunters still use curare-tipped darts), and teaches you to read the forest. Giant kapok trees with buttress roots the size of rooms, strangler figs consuming their host trees, leaf-cutter ant highways crossing the trail.
Afternoon: search for pink river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) — these Amazonian dolphins are born gray and turn pink with age (the males, especially). They’re intelligent, curious, and often approach boats. Swimming with them (optional, in authorized areas) is an unforgettable experience. Evening: cayman spotting by spotlight — their eyes glow like rubies in the dark. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Indigenous Village & Victoria Regia Water Lilies
Morning: visit an indigenous Ticuna community. The Ticuna are the most numerous Amazonian ethnic group, and their culture — language, body painting with genipapo fruit dye, ceremonial dances — persists despite centuries of contact. Participate in a traditional ceremony, learn about their cosmology (the Amazon is not “jungle” to them — it’s a living entity, a relative), and purchase authentic crafts directly from artisans. Afternoon: visit a lake covered in Victoria amazonica — the giant water lilies with leaves up to 3m in diameter that can support the weight of a small child. These are the world’s largest water lilies, and their flowers change color from white (first night), to pink (second night), to purple before closing. Piranha fishing — surprising, satisfying, and you’ll eat your catch. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: Canopy Walkway & Jungle Survival
Morning: canopy walkway — an elevated walkway 35m above the forest floor, reaching into the canopy where most of the Amazon’s biodiversity lives. At this height, you’re among the treetop dwellers: toucans, macaws, howler monkeys, and three-toed sloths. The view of the unbroken forest canopy stretching to the horizon is humbling. Your guide points out epiphytic orchids and bromeliads that live their entire lives without touching the ground.
Afternoon: jungle survival workshop — your guide teaches fire-making without matches, identifying edible fruits and insects (lemon ants taste like… lemon), finding drinking water in lianas, and building a temporary shelter. These skills have sustained Amazonian peoples for millennia. Evening: night canoe excursion for nocturnal wildlife — tree boas, kinkajous (honey bears), and night monkeys. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 5: Tarapoto Lakes & Monkey Island
Full day excursion to the Tarapoto Lakes, a complex of 22 interconnected lakes. These black-water lakes are rich in wildlife — the calm water reflects the jungle perfectly, making photography magical. Visit Monkey Island, a rescue sanctuary for monkeys rescued from the illegal pet trade — woolly monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and capuchins that have been habituated to humans and may climb onto your shoulders. Afternoon: kayaking through flooded forest (igapó) where trees grow straight out of the water and you paddle between their trunks. Farewell dinner at the lodge. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 6: Leticia — Departure
Morning boat back to Leticia. Visit the local market where Amazonian fruits (cupuaçu, açaí, camu camu — the world’s highest source of vitamin C) and fish (pirarucú, the world’s largest freshwater scaled fish, up to 3m) are sold. Flight to Bogotá for international connection.
