Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Copenhagen — The Fairytale Capital
Arrive Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. Denmark’s capital is consistently rated the world’s most livable city — a place where bicycles outnumber cars, the harbor is clean enough to swim in, and “hygge” (cozy contentment) is the governing philosophy. Afternoon: Nyhavn, the 17th-century canal lined with colorful townhouses where Hans Christian Andersen once lived. Evening: Tivoli Gardens (1843) — the world’s second-oldest amusement park, a whimsical wonderland of gardens, rides, and twinkling lights that inspired Walt Disney. Welcome dinner at a New Nordic restaurant. Overnight in Copenhagen.
Day 2: Copenhagen — Royal Palaces & Little Mermaid
Morning: Amalienborg Palace — the winter residence of the Danish royal family, four identical rococo palaces around an octagonal courtyard where the Royal Guards change in their bearskin hats. Rosenborg Castle (1606) houses the Crown Jewels and the coronation throne of Danish monarchs. Afternoon: the Little Mermaid statue — small, modest, and perpetually mobbed by tourists, yet somehow still moving. Visit Christiania, Copenhagen’s famous “freetown” — a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood of colorful murals, organic eateries, and a unique social experiment that has endured since 1971. Evening: dinner in the Meatpacking District (Kødbyen), Copenhagen’s hippest food scene. Overnight in Copenhagen.
Day 3: Copenhagen to Stockholm — Overnight Cruise
Morning: free time for the Round Tower (1642) — Europe’s oldest functioning observatory, with an internal spiral ramp instead of stairs (designed so a horse and carriage could reach the top). Afternoon: board the overnight cruise ferry to Stockholm across the Baltic Sea. The ferry is a floating hotel — restaurants, bars, sauna, and the archipelago scenery as you depart Denmark’s coast. Sunset over the Baltic. Overnight in a private cabin on the ferry.
Day 4: Stockholm — Venice of the North
Morning arrival through the Stockholm archipelago — 30,000 islands in a breathtaking approach. Stockholm is built on 14 islands and is one of the world’s most beautiful capitals. Morning: Gamla Stan (Old Town) — cobblestone streets, medieval alleyways, and the Royal Palace (one of Europe’s largest, with 600 rooms). The changing of the guard with mounted cavalry is a spectacle. Afternoon: the Vasa Museum — housing the Vasa warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was recovered 333 years later, 98% intact. It’s the world’s best-preserved 17th-century ship and one of the most visited museums in Scandinavia. Day 5: Stockholm — ABBA & Nordic Culture
Morning: ABBA The Museum — because resistance is futile. Interactive exhibits let you sing, dance, and virtually perform with the band. Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum (1891): 150 historic buildings from across Sweden, including a complete 19th-century town, plus Nordic animals — moose, brown bears, wolves, and lynx. Afternoon: the Stockholm City Hall, venue of the Nobel Prize banquet, with its Golden Hall covered in 18 million gold mosaic tiles. Overnight in Stockholm.
Day 6: Stockholm to Oslo — Across Sweden
Morning express train from Stockholm to Oslo (5-6 hours), traversing Sweden’s forested interior, a landscape of pine, birch, and a thousand lakes glimpsed through the window. Arrive Oslo in the afternoon. Evening: walk the Oslo Opera House roof and the Barcode district. Overnight in Oslo.
Day 7: Oslo to Flåm — The Norwegian Fjord Experience
Bergen Railway across the Hardangervidda to Myrdal. Transfer to the Flåm Railway — 20km of the world’s steepest standard-gauge railway, descending past waterfalls and mountain farms into the fjord. Arrive Flåm. Afternoon: fjord cruise through the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord (UNESCO). The fjord walls rise 1,700m — waterfalls cascade, seals swim alongside, and eagles ride thermals overhead. Overnight in Flåm.
Day 8: Flåm to Bergen — Gateway to the Fjords
Continue by boat and bus through the fjord landscape to Bergen. Afternoon: Bryggen, Fløibanen, and Bergen’s Fish Market. Overnight in Bergen.
Day 9: Bergen to Helsinki — Nordic Finale
Morning flight Bergen to Helsinki (via Oslo). Helsinki is the youngest of the Nordic capitals, a design city where Functionalism meets Art Nouveau. Afternoon: Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral (the White Church, 1852) — the neoclassical heart of the city. Temppeliaukio Church (the Rock Church, 1969) — blasted into solid granite and topped with a copper dome, its raw rock walls creating near-perfect acoustics. The Design District around Punavuori is a paradise for lovers of Finnish design — Marimekko, Iittala, Artek. Overnight in Helsinki.
Day 10: Helsinki — Suomenlinna & Departure
Morning: Suomenlinna Sea Fortress (UNESCO, 1748) — a star-shaped fortress spread across six islands, built when Finland was part of Sweden to defend against Russia. The ferry ride (15 minutes) through the Helsinki archipelago is part of the experience. Return to the city for final shopping at Market Square (Kauppatori). Farewell lunch of Finnish specialties — reindeer, salmon soup (lohikeitto), and Karelian pies. Transfer to Helsinki Airport.
