Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu National Park
Arrive Kota Kinabalu. Drive to Kinabalu National Park (UNESCO World Heritage). Mount Kinabalu (4,095m) is the highest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea. Day 2: trek the lower trails through moss forest — pitcher plants (the park has 1,000+ orchid species and the world’s largest pitcher plant, Nepenthes rajah, which can hold 3.5 liters and has been known to trap rats), the world’s largest flower Rafflesia (1m diameter, smells like rotting meat), and birds found nowhere else on Earth. Overnight at Kinabalu Park HQ.
Day 3-4: Kinabatangan River — Wildlife Cruises
Fly to Sandakan, drive to Kinabatangan. Two days of river safaris, jungle walks, and night drives spotting proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, orangutans, hornbills, and crocodiles. Overnights at a riverside eco-lodge.
Day 5: Turtle Islands — Night Landing
Boat to Selingan Island, part of Turtle Islands Park. This is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world. At night, under the supervision of park rangers, you witness green and hawksbill turtles hauling themselves up the beach to lay eggs — a ritual that has occurred here for millions of years. Watch the rangers collect eggs for the hatchery, and if you’re lucky, participate in the release of hatchlings — watching baby turtles scramble across the sand into the sea is a moment of pure wildlife magic. Overnight in basic chalets on the island.
Day 6: Sepilok Orangutans & Sun Bears
Return to Sandakan. Visit Sepilok Orangutan Centre and the Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Afternoon at the Rainforest Discovery Centre’s canopy walkways. Overnight in Sandakan.
Day 7-8: Danum Valley — Ancient Rainforest
Two days in Danum Valley: canopy walkway, jungle treks, waterfall swims, night drives for clouded leopards and tarsiers. Overnights at Borneo Rainforest Lodge.
Day 9: Return to Kota Kinabalu
Fly back to KK. Afternoon: visit the Mari Mari Cultural Village for an immersive experience of Sabah’s indigenous cultures. Farewell dinner. Overnight in KK.
