Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Baku
Land at Baku Airport. Transfer to hotel. Evening walk along the Caspian Sea Boulevard, watching the Flame Towers illuminate in their nightly display. The towers’ LED facade creates a flickering fire effect referencing Azerbaijan’s nickname “Land of Fire” — a legacy of the natural gas vents that burned eternally on these hills. Welcome dinner in the Old City. Overnight in Baku.
Day 2: Baku Old City
Full day exploring Icherisheher — the walled Old City. The Maiden Tower, Shirvanshahs’ Palace, and the narrow streets where you can still see women selling fresh bread from their doorways. Visit the Carpet Museum (shaped like a rolled carpet) to understand Azerbaijan’s most celebrated craft. Afternoon: the modern Baku — Heydar Aliyev Center by Zaha Hadid, the flame-shaped skyscrapers, and Fountain Square. Overnight in Baku.
Day 3: Gobustan & Absheron Peninsula
Visit Gobustan’s 40,000-year-old petroglyphs and the mud volcanoes — Azerbaijan has the most mud volcanoes in the world, and watching them burble gray mud is surreal. Afternoon: Ateshgah Fire Temple (the “Fire Temple of Baku”) and Yanar Dag, the eternally burning hillside. These sites explain why Zoroastrianism flourished here and why Azerbaijan is called the Land of Fire. Overnight in Baku.
Day 4: Sheki — Silk Road Caravanserai
Drive through the Caucasus foothills. Visit Sheki’s Khan Palace with its magnificent stained glass windows (shebeke) — millions of tiny wooden pieces fitted without a single nail or drop of glue. Lunch at a caravanserai that once housed Silk Road merchants. Watch a shebeke master at work. Overnight in Sheki.
Day 5: Cross to Georgia — Kakheti Wine Country
Border crossing. Enter Kakheti, Georgia’s primary wine region. Georgia has the world’s oldest wine culture (8,000 years of continuous production) and the qvevri method is UNESCO-listed. Visit Signagi, the walled hilltown with Alazani Valley views. Afternoon wine tasting at a family cellar — Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, and qvevri-aged amber wines. Overnight in Kakheti.
Day 6: Georgian Military Highway — Kazbegi
The legendary mountain road. Ananuri Fortress on the turquoise reservoir. The Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument above a 2,000m drop. Mount Kazbek (5,047m) dominating the skyline. Hike or 4×4 to Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170m) — the mountain and the stone church make one of the Caucasus’s great images. Overnight in Kazbegi.
Day 7: Mtskheta & Tbilisi
Visit Mtskheta — Jvari Monastery (the iconic view of two rivers merging) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (Georgia’s holiest church). Afternoon: Tbilisi Old Town — Narikala Fortress, sulfur baths, the Bridge of Peace. Overnight in Tbilisi.
Day 8: Tbilisi Discovery
Full day in Georgia’s capital. National Museum (the spectacular Colchian gold collection, 8th-3rd century BC), Rustaveli Avenue, the Dry Bridge flea market, and the Chronicle of Georgia monument. Evening: Georgian supra feast — khinkali, khachapuri, endless toasts, Georgian polyphonic singing. Overnight in Tbilisi.
Day 9: Gori, Uplistsikhe & Borjomi
Stalin Museum in Gori (his personal railway carriage, death mask, and an uncomfortable look at history). Uplistsikhe Cave City — 3,000 years of history carved into rock. Borjomi’s mineral water and forested gorge. Overnight in Borjomi.
Day 10: Vardzia & Rabati
Vardzia Cave Monastery — Queen Tamar’s 12th-century city carved into a vertical cliff, with preserved frescoes and an irrigation system. Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe, a beautifully restored multicultural fortress. Overnight in Akhaltsikhe.
Day 11: Into Armenia — Debed Canyon Monasteries
Cross into Armenia. Haghpat and Sanahin Monasteries (UNESCO) — medieval Armenian architecture at its finest: conical domes, elaborate khachkars, and the extraordinary star-vaulted gavit of Sanahin. Drive through Dilijan National Park. Overnight near Lake Sevan.
Day 12: Lake Sevan & Yerevan
Lake Sevan (1,900m) — Armenia’s inland sea. Sevanavank Monastery on the peninsula. Noratus Cemetery with 900 medieval khachkars — a stone forest of carved crosses. Arrive Yerevan. Evening: Republic Square dancing fountains. Overnight in Yerevan.
Day 13: Ararat Views & Ancient Armenia
Khor Virap Monastery — the closest point to Mount Ararat, Armenia’s national symbol visible across the Turkish border. Garni Temple (1st century AD), the sole surviving Hellenistic temple in the Caucasus. Geghard Monastery (UNESCO), partially carved into the mountain — listen for the incredible acoustics in the rock-hewn chambers. Overnight in Yerevan.
Day 14: Departure
Vernissage market for souvenirs. Transfer to Yerevan Airport. Depart with memories of three extraordinary countries, thousands of years of history, and some of the world’s most spectacular mountain landscapes.
