Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive La Palma — La Isla Bonita
Fly to La Palma (SPC), the greenest and most pristine of the Canary Islands. Known as “La Isla Bonita” (the Beautiful Island), it’s a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve entirely and has the world’s first Starlight Reserve — its strict light pollution laws make it one of the best places on Earth for astronomy. Transfer to Santa Cruz de La Palma, a perfectly preserved colonial town of cobbled streets and wooden-balconied houses. Evening: orientation walk and welcome dinner. Overnight in Santa Cruz.
Day 2: Caldera de Taburiente National Park
Full day in the Caldera de Taburiente, an enormous erosion crater 8km across with walls rising 2,000m to the rim. This is not a volcanic crater but a caldera formed by erosion, creating one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Canaries. Hike the classic route: from La Cumbrecita viewpoint (1,287m), descend into the caldera along the Lomo de las Chozas trail. The contrast between the lush green pine forest and the dramatic rock walls, with waterfalls cascading down the inner walls (Cascada de Colores), is stunning. Swim in natural pools fed by mountain streams. 10km, 400m ascent, 5 hours. Overnight in Santa Cruz.
Day 3: Roque de los Muchachos Observatory
Morning drive to Roque de los Muchachos (2,426m), the highest point on La Palma and home to one of the world’s premier astronomical observatories. The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory hosts telescopes from over 60 institutions worldwide, including the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) — currently the world’s largest single-aperture optical telescope. The mountain is above the cloud inversion layer 90% of the time, with skies so clear and dark that scientists come from every continent to observe here. Afternoon visit to the visitor center with interactive astronomy exhibits. Evening: professional stargazing session with high-powered telescopes — the Milky Way, Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s moons, and deep-sky objects are visible with mind-boggling clarity. Overnight in Santa Cruz.
Day 4: Volcano Route — Cumbre Vieja
Drive south to hike the Ruta de los Volcanes on the Cumbre Vieja ridge, a 17km trail connecting 14 volcanic craters along the southern spine of La Palma. This is where the 2021 Tajogaite eruption occurred — a new volcano that erupted for 85 days, creating a new 200m-high cone and adding 43 hectares to the island. While the immediate eruption zone is restricted, the trail passes through extraordinary volcanic landscapes of older cones, lava fields, and Canary pine forests. The views alternate between the Atlantic on both sides of the island. 10km section, 500m ascent, 4-5 hours. Overnight in Santa Cruz.
Day 5: Los Tilos Laurisilva & Northern Coast
Visit Los Tilos, the largest surviving laurisilva forest in the Canaries (UNESCO World Heritage). This subtropical cloud forest is a living fossil from the Tertiary period. The Cascada de Los Tilos trail leads through a tunnel carved into the mountain to a viewpoint of a 150m waterfall plunging through the green canopy. Afternoon: drive to the northern coast — the natural pools of Charco Azul, volcanic rock pools filled with crystal-clear Atlantic water, and the dramatic cliffs of Barlovento. Farewell dinner at a restaurant in the charming village of San Andrés. Overnight in Santa Cruz.
Day 6: Santa Cruz & Depart
Morning walking tour of Santa Cruz de La Palma: the Calle Real (Royal Street) with its 16th-century houses, the Iglesia del Salvador (1503), and the famous wooden balconies of the Avenida Marítima. Visit the island’s oldest bakery for almendrados (almond cookies). Transfer to airport.
