Day 1: Arrive Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

Fly to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (PK), accessible only by air or sea. The Kamchatka Peninsula — 1,250km of volcanic spine with 300+ volcanoes (29 active) — is one of Earth’s most geologically active regions. PK sits on the shores of Avacha Bay, surrounded by volcanoes that smoke gently on the horizon. The entire peninsula was a closed military zone until 1990; it remains one of Russia’s wildest frontiers. Check into your hotel. Evening: orientation with your volcanologist guide. Overnight in Petropavlovsk.

Day 2: Avacha Volcano Summit Attempt

Drive to the base of Avachinsky Volcano (2,741m), one of Kamchatka’s most active. The ascent begins on a 4×4 track through birch forest, emerging onto a volcanic plateau of lava fields. The climb to the summit involves scrambling up volcanic scree and snow fields (crampons provided). From the crater rim: peer into the active fumarole field — steam vents, sulfur deposits, and the acrid smell of the Earth’s interior. On clear days, views encompass Koryaksky Volcano, the Pacific Ocean, and the entire Avacha group. The descent is a gloriously fast scree run. 13km, 1,500m ascent, 8-10 hours. Overnight in Petropavlovsk.

Day 3: Mutnovsky Volcano & Dangerous Canyon

Drive 4 hours south across the tundra to Mutnovsky Volcano (2,322m), one of the most spectacular active volcanoes on Earth. The hike enters the Mutnovsky crater via a gorge called Dangerous Canyon — steam vents, boiling mud pots, fumaroles emitting sulfur dioxide, and the crater glacier (ice and fire coexisting). The active fumarole field is one of the most powerful in the world — vents roar like jet engines, steam columns rise 500m, and the ground is hot to touch. The colors are surreal: sulfur yellow, iron red, copper green, and ice blue. Optional: ice cave exploration inside the glacier tongue. 10km, 600m ascent, 5-6 hours. Overnight in Petropavlovsk.

Day 4: Helicopter to Valley of Geysers

The crown jewel: a helicopter flight (1.5 hours) to the Valley of Geysers in Kronotsky Nature Reserve. This is the second-largest geyser field in the world (after Yellowstone) and the only one in Eurasia. The valley was discovered only in 1941 by a scientist and his dog; it remained a state secret until the 1990s. The helicopter descends into the canyon where 40+ geysers and hundreds of hot springs erupt among lush vegetation — the contrast of boiling water, steam, and the emerald green of the surrounding forest is otherworldly. Walk the boardwalks among geysers with names like “Giant” (30m eruptions), “Pearl,” and “Sugar Bowl.” The helicopter continues to the Uzon Caldera (8×12km volcanic basin with 1,000+ hot springs of every chemical composition — acid, alkaline, sulfur, arsenic) and a landing at a hot river where you can bathe in geothermal water. Overnight in Petropavlovsk.

Day 5: Pacific Ocean Safari & Starichkov Island

Morning boat trip on Avacha Bay into the Pacific Ocean. The waters around Kamchatka are among the richest marine ecosystems on Earth. Visit Starichkov Island, a seabird reserve where tufted puffins, horned puffins, cormorants, and kittiwakes nest on the cliffs. With luck: sea otters floating on their backs cracking open sea urchins, Steller’s sea lions hauled out on the rocks, and orcas or gray whales in the channel. Fishing for Kamchatka salmon and halibut (catch and keep for dinner). Afternoon: visit the fish market in Petropavlovsk for red caviar, king crab, and smoked salmon — Kamchatka’s seafood is world-famous. Overnight in Petropavlovsk.

Day 6: Tolbachik Volcano — Dead Forest

Drive 8 hours north to the Tolbachik volcanic complex. The 1975-76 Tolbachik eruption was one of the largest basaltic eruptions in recorded history — it created the “Dead Forest,” where trees were killed by ash and heat but remain standing as gray, leafless skeletons, and kilometers of lava tubes and caves (some with floors of permanent ice). Camp at the base of the volcano. Overnight: tent camp (warm sleeping bags, all camping equipment provided).

Day 7: Tolbachik Craters & Cinder Cones

Full-day hike through the Tolbachik volcanic landscape. Climb to the rim of the 1975 Northern Breakthrough cones, formed during the eruption. Walk through the Dead Forest — the surreal contrast of gray tree skeletons against black lava, with steaming fumaroles in the distance, is one of the most otherworldly landscapes accessible to hikers. Explore lava tubes, including the Ice Cave with its permanent ice floor. 15km, 700m ascent, 7-8 hours. Overnight: tent camp.

Day 8: Bystrinsky Nature Park — Reindeer & Evenki Culture

Drive north into the Bystrinsky Nature Park in central Kamchatka. Visit an Evenki reindeer herding camp — the Evenki are indigenous reindeer nomads whose route-finding ability is legendary (they guided all major Russian expeditions across Siberia). Learn about reindeer herding, try traditional foods, and experience Evenki singing and drumming. Evening: thermal hot springs soak under the stars. Overnight: guesthouse in Esso village.

Day 9: Return to Petropavlovsk & Hot Springs

Morning hike to a waterfall in Bystrinsky Park for last views of the Kamchatka wilderness. Afternoon drive back to Petropavlovsk. Visit the Paratunka hot springs resort — natural geothermal pools where you can soak tired muscles. Farewell dinner with Kamchatka crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) — the red king crab that can span 1.8m and weigh 12kg. Overnight in Petropavlovsk.

Day 10: Depart Petropavlovsk

Morning at the Vulcanarium Museum (interactive volcano science). Transfer to Yelizovo Airport.
