Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Beijing to Pyongyang

Air Koryo flight to Pyongyang. Evening orientation walk along the Taedong River. Overnight Yanggakdo Hotel.

Day 2: Pyongyang — The Capital

Mansudae Grand Monument, Grand People’s Study House, Pyongyang Metro ride, Juche Tower, and Arch of Triumph. Evening: Mangyongdae Children’s Palace performance. Overnight Yanggakdo Hotel.

Day 3: Myohyangsan — Mountain of Mysterious Fragrance

Drive 2.5 hours to Mount Myohyang, one of Korea’s most sacred mountains. Visit the International Friendship Exhibition — two vast complexes built into the mountainside displaying gifts given to Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il by foreign dignitaries. The sheer scale (over 220,000 gifts in 150+ rooms) is staggering. Hike the Manpok Valley trail to the Pohyon Buddhist Temple, an 11th-century temple rebuilt after the Korean War — one of the few active Buddhist sites in the country, set among waterfalls and ancient pines. Overnight in Myohyangsan.

Day 4: Myohyangsan to Wonsan — To the Sea

Morning hike in the Myohyang range. Afternoon drive east across the peninsula to Wonsan, a port city on the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea). The 230km drive reveals dramatically different landscapes from the Pyongyang corridor — rugged mountains, fewer checkpoints, and glimpses of the eastern coastline. Wonsan has been designated as a future special tourism zone with beach resorts. Evening walk on Songdowon Beach, a sandy stretch facing the sea. Overnight in Wonsan.

Day 5: Wonsan & Ullim Falls

Visit the Wonsan Agricultural College to see North Korean organic farming methods. Continue to Ullim Falls, a 75m waterfall set in a dramatic gorge where local families picnic on weekends. Afternoon: hiking in the Masikryong mountains — the Masikryong Ski Resort (built 2014) was one of Kim Jong Un’s pet projects and features slopes that visitors can use. Overnight in Wonsan.

Day 6: Wonsan to Pyongyang via Sariwon

Scenic drive back to Pyongyang, stopping at Sariwon to see the fortress walls and traditional Korean pavilion. Afternoon: revisit any Pyongyang sites you’d like to photograph again — the afternoon light transforms the city’s monumental architecture. Farewell dinner at a local Pyongyang restaurant. Overnight Yanggakdo Hotel.

Day 7: Depart Pyongyang

Morning at the Pyongyang Film Studio. Fly Air Koryo to Beijing.
