Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Dandong to Pyongyang — Crossing the Yalu
Meet your guides at Dandong Station, the Chinese border city facing North Korea across the Yalu River. The train crosses the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge — a sobering 5-minute journey that takes you into one of the world’s most isolated nations. After immigration at Sinuiju, board the domestic train south (or continue on the international train if available). The 5-hour journey through the North Korean countryside offers a rare window into rural life: ox-drawn plows, villages without electricity poles, and endless propaganda slogans carved into hillsides. Arrive Pyongyang Station — the capital is startlingly clean, monumentally scaled, and eerily quiet. Evening: brief walking orientation. Overnight at the Yanggakdo International Hotel on an island in the Taedong River, one of the few hotels foreigners can stay in — its revolving restaurant on the 47th floor offers panoramic views of the city.
Day 2: Pyongyang — The Showcase Capital
Full day of Pyongyang’s monumental sights. Morning: Mansudae Grand Monument — the enormous bronze statues of President Kim Il Sung and General Kim Jong Il, where protocol requires a bow and flower offering. Visit the Grand People’s Study House, a traditional Korean-style building housing millions of books with a balcony offering the classic photogenic view of Kim Il Sung Square below. Walk through Kim Il Sung Square itself — the giant plaza where military parades and mass dances take place, famously seen in satellite imagery completely empty most other days. Visit the Pyongyang Metro, one of the world’s deepest subway systems (110m underground, doubling as nuclear shelter) — ride a few stops on the Chollima Line, where stations feature socialist realist murals, chandeliers, and newspapers on display stands. Afternoon: the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum, telling the North Korean version of the Korean War. See the USS Pueblo, the American spy ship captured in 1968 and still displayed as a trophy. Kwangbok Department Store — one of the few places tourists can use local currency. Overnight at Yanggakdo Hotel.
Day 3: Depart Pyongyang
Morning at the Arch of Triumph (deliberately 3 meters taller than Paris’s) and the Juche Tower (170m monument to the state ideology of self-reliance). Transfer to Pyongyang Station for the train back to Dandong. Cross back into China by afternoon, with experiences and photographs that few travelers in the world possess.
