Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Tahiti — Ia Orana!
Arrive at Fa’a’ā International Airport, greeted with a fragrant tiare flower lei and the traditional Tahitian welcome. Transfer to your resort overlooking Matavai Bay, where the first European explorers — Wallis, Bougainville, and Cook — all anchored. Evening: walk Papeete’s waterfront and visit the roulottes (food trucks) at Place Vaiete for your first taste of poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut milk and lime). In Polynesian culture, the concept of fiu (relax, take it easy) begins now. Overnight in Tahiti.
Day 2: Tahiti Island Discovery
Full-day exploration of Tahiti Nui (Big Tahiti). Drive the coastal road to the Arahoho Blowhole, where the sea crashes through a lava tube and erupts through a hole in the rock. Visit the Vaipahi Water Gardens for a swim in freshwater pools. Continue to the Gauguin Museum (Paul Gauguin lived his final years in French Polynesia, painting some of his most famous works here). Afternoon: visit Point Venus, where Captain Cook observed the transit of Venus in 1769. Swim at the black-sand beach of Lafayette. Overnight in Tahiti.
Day 3: Fly to Bora Bora — The Pearl of the Pacific
Morning flight (50 minutes) to Bora Bora — the island that invented the word “paradise.” The approach alone justifies the trip: the lagoon appears below in concentric rings of turquoise, aquamarine, and deep blue, surrounding the emerald peaks of Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia. Transfer by boat to your overwater bungalow resort. Afternoon: snorkel in the lagoon right from your deck — butterflyfish, parrotfish, and the occasional stingray glide beneath your feet. Overnight in Bora Bora (overwater bungalow).
Day 4: Bora Bora Lagoon Safari
Full-day lagoon excursion: swim with blacktip reef sharks and majestic stingrays in the shallow sandbars. Your guide will feed the rays by hand while they glide around your legs — a surprisingly gentle experience. Snorkel the famous Coral Garden, where anthias fish create clouds of orange and purple above pristine coral. Picnic lunch on a private motu (islet): fresh grilled mahi-mahi, poisson cru, tropical fruits, and Hinano beer. Visit the spot where American forces built an airstrip during WWII — the island’s history includes 5,000 GIs stationed here, who left behind the first road and introduced baseball. Overnight in Bora Bora.
Day 5: Mount Otemanu & 4×4 Safari
Morning: 4×4 safari up the slopes of Bora Bora to reach viewpoints overlooking the lagoon from above. The road climbs past World War II American cannons still pointing out to sea, relics of when the island was “Operation Bobcat.” Views from the summit panorama encompass the entire lagoon and, on clear days, the distant silhouettes of Raiatea and Tahaa. Afternoon: free to enjoy your overwater bungalow — watch eagle rays glide past your glass floor panel. Evening: sunset cruise with Champagne, watching the sky turn orange behind Mount Otemanu. Overnight in Bora Bora.
Day 6: Return to Tahiti & Papeete
Morning flight back to Tahiti. Visit the Papeete Municipal Market (Le Marché) — a two-story temple to tropical abundance where you’ll find vanilla beans, monoi oil, black pearls, and hand-painted pareos. This is where Tahitians shop, gossip, and play ukulele. Afternoon: visit the Robert Wan Pearl Museum to understand why Tahitian black pearls command such astronomical prices. Farewell dinner at a gourmet restaurant: lobster with vanilla sauce, Tahitian raw fish, and a dessert of po’e (banana pudding baked in banana leaves). Overnight in Tahiti.
Day 7: Depart Tahiti — Nana!
Transfer to airport. You’ll leave with the scent of monoi oil and the memory of water in colors that shouldn’t exist.
