Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Nouakchott

Arrive in Nouakchott, Mauritania’s capital where the Sahara meets the Atlantic. Visit Port de Pêche, one of Africa’s most colorful fishing ports. Hundreds of wooden pirogues bring in the day’s catch while fish is hauled, cleaned, and dried on the beach. Evening: Nouakchott’s central market.

Day 2: Drive to Atar — Gateway to the Adrar

Depart in 4×4 vehicles for the Adrar region, Mauritania’s dramatic desert heartland. Pass through ever-changing landscapes: acacia-dotted savanna giving way to rolling dunes. Arrive in Atar, the oasis town that serves as gateway to the Adrar. Visit the lively market where Saharan nomads trade.

Day 3: Chinguetti — The 7th Holy City of Islam

Drive to Chinguetti, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Islam’s seven holy cities. Founded in 777 AD, this desert town was a major center of Islamic scholarship on trans-Saharan trade routes. Visit ancient libraries housing manuscripts dating to the 9th century — astronomy, mathematics, law, and poetry preserved in leather-bound volumes. Tour the stone mosque with its distinctive square minaret. Camel ride into the surrounding dunes at sunset.

Day 4: Ouadane & Sahara’s Eye

Continue to Ouadane, another ancient caravan city perched on a rocky outcrop. Then to one of Earth’s most extraordinary geological features — the Richat Structure, known as the “Eye of the Sahara.” This 40km-diameter circular formation is so vast it was used as a landmark by Space Shuttle astronauts. The concentric rings of exposed rock in blue, brown, and gold are a geological masterpiece.

Day 5: Terjit Oasis

Journey to Terjit, a hidden oasis where a permanent spring feeds a narrow palm-filled canyon. Natural pools offer cool swimming in the desert heat. The spring waters emerge from beneath the cliffs providing a year-round green strip of date palms in the vast Sahara. Overnight in traditional Mauritanian tents.

Day 6: Camel Trek & Return to Nouakchott

Morning camel trek with nomadic guides who share centuries of desert survival knowledge. Return drive to Nouakchott via the coast. Evening: Nouakchott fish dinner — grilled capitaine straight from the Atlantic.

Day 7: Departure

Morning at leisure. Visit the National Museum. Transfer to airport.
