Itinerary Highlights

Day 1-2: Arrive Bissau — Colonial Capital

Arrive at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau, one of Africa’s smallest and most atmospheric capitals. Walking tour of the crumbling Portuguese colonial architecture: the pink Presidential Palace, the Cathedral of Bissau, Porto Pidjiguiti (the old port), the vibrant Bandim Market. Visit the National Ethnographic Museum with its extraordinary collection of Bijagós masks and ceremonial objects.

Day 3-4: Cacheu & Canchungo — Kingdom of Bassarel

Drive north to Cacheu, a 16th-century Portuguese slave trading post. Visit the somber fort and slave museum. Continue to Canchungo in the Manjaco Kingdom of Bassarel — a traditional kingdom that continues to govern according to ancestral laws. Meet the régulo (king) and witness sacred Manjaco ceremonies rarely seen by outsiders. Visit Quinhamel’s traditional healers.

Day 5-7: Bijagós Archipelago — UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Speedboat to the Bijagós Islands, an archipelago of 88 islands that is one of Africa’s most pristine ecosystems and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Settle into Ponta Anchaca Resort on Rubane Island. Day trips to Orango Island to track rare saltwater hippos — unique to the Bijagós. Visit the matriarchal society of the Bijagós people, where women control property and choose their husbands. Canoe through mangroves filled with monkeys, crocodiles, and spectacular birdlife including African fish eagles, pink flamingos, and pelicans.

Day 8-9: Cantanhez National Park — Chimpanzee Territory

Return to the mainland and drive south to Cantanhez National Park, home to wild chimpanzees that live alongside local communities. Guided forest walk to track chimpanzee troops using their unique nut-cracking behavior as an acoustic beacon. The park also shelters colobus monkeys, bushbuck, and over 200 bird species.

Day 10: Return to Bissau & Departure

Drive back to Bissau. Final visit to the Central Market for wood carvings, traditional textiles, and cashew nuts (Guinea-Bissau’s top export). Transfer to airport.
