Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Bishkek — Central Asia’s Green Capital
Arrive at Manas International Airport. Bishkek is one of the greenest cities in Central Asia, with tree-lined boulevards and the snow-capped Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountains as a constant backdrop. Afternoon: visit Ala-Too Square, the State History Museum, and Osh Bazaar — a sensory explosion of spices, dried fruits, and fresh produce. Welcome dinner of beshbarmak (boiled meat with noodles — the national dish). Overnight in Bishkek.
Day 2: Ala Archa National Park — Tian Shan Welcome
Morning drive to Ala Archa National Park (40km from Bishkek), a stunning alpine valley that serves as Kyrgyzstan’s outdoor playground. Hike to the Ak-Sai waterfall through juniper forests with views of 4,800m peaks, glaciers, and the Ak-Sai River. Picnic lunch in the valley. Afternoon: drive to Burana Tower (11th century), a minaret from the ancient city of Balasagun that was once a major stop on the Silk Road. Climb the tower for views of the Chuy Valley and the Tian Shan. Visit the nearby balbals (stone warriors) — 1,500-year-old Turkic grave markers. Overnight in Bishkek.
Day 3: Issyk-Kul Lake — Pearl of the Tian Shan
Drive to Issyk-Kul Lake (3 hours), the second-largest saline lake in the world after the Caspian Sea and the world’s second-largest alpine lake after Titicaca. Despite being surrounded by snow-capped peaks, Issyk-Kul never freezes — its name means “hot lake.” Visit the petroglyphs at Cholpon-Ata (open-air gallery of 2,000+ rock carvings from 800 BC). Afternoon: swim in the lake’s mineral-rich waters. Overnight at a lakeside resort.
Day 4: Karakol — Russian Orthodox & Dungan Heritage
Drive along Issyk-Kul’s southern shore to Karakol, a charming town at the foot of the Tian Shan. Visit the Dungan Mosque — a Chinese-style pagoda built without a single nail by Dungan (Chinese Muslim) refugees in 1910. Visit the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church — a wooden church built in 1895. Afternoon: hike in the nearby Jeti-Ögüz gorge with its famous red sandstone formations (Seven Bulls). Overnight in a Karakol guesthouse.
Day 5: Altyn Arashan — Hot Springs in the Sky
Day trip to Altyn Arashan (Golden Spa), a pristine valley at 2,600m reachable only by 4×4 (or an 8-hour hike for the ambitious). Soak in natural hot springs surrounded by 5,000m peaks and the Palatka Glacier. Hike to alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers (July-September). The valley has no electricity — it’s just you, the mountains, and the steaming thermal pools. Overnight at a basic mountain hut or yurt in Altyn Arashan.
Day 6: Song-Kul Lake — Nomad Summer Pastures
Long but spectacular drive to Song-Kul Lake (3,016m), a vast high-altitude lake surrounded by the summer pastures (jailoo) of Kyrgyz nomads. Here, shepherds bring their flocks in summer, living in yurts just as their ancestors have for thousands of years. Ride horses across the vast, empty grasslands. Drink kumys (fermented mare’s milk) with a shepherd family. Watch the sunset turn the lake and sky into a riot of color. Overnight in a yurt camp.
Day 7: Song-Kul to Bishkek
Dawn horse ride to watch the sun rise over the jailoo. Drive back to Bishkek through the Suusamyr Valley. Farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant with live komuz music (three-stringed instrument). Overnight in Bishkek.
Day 8: Depart Bishkek
Morning at Osh Bazaar for souvenirs (felt carpets, kalpaks — traditional hats). Transfer to airport.
