Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Paramaribo
Welcome to Suriname, the smallest country in South America and one of its most diverse. Transfer to your hotel in the UNESCO-listed historic center. Evening stroll through the Palmentuin (Palm Garden) behind the Presidential Palace. Overnight in Paramaribo.
Day 2: Paramaribo — A City Like No Other
Full-day walking tour. Fort Zeelandia (1667), the massive wooden St. Peter and Paul Cathedral (the largest wooden building in the Western Hemisphere), Independence Square, the Presidential Palace, and the Neveh Shalom Synagogue beside the Ahmadiyya Mosque. Visit the Central Market — this is where Suriname’s world comes together: Javanese satay, Hindustani roti, Creole pom, Chinese dim sum, and Maroon cassava bread all in one place. Afternoon at the Surinaams Museum in Fort Zeelandia for an excellent overview of Suriname’s complex history. Overnight in Paramaribo.
Day 3: Commewijne River — Plantations & Dolphins
Full day exploring the Commewijne District. Morning at Peperpot Nature Park — walk among howler monkeys and toucans in a 300-year-old coffee plantation now reclaimed by the rainforest. Visit Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, an 18th-century Dutch fort at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers with a fascinating open-air museum. Lunch in a traditional Javanese-Surinamese restaurant. Afternoon: boat cruise on the Commewijne watching for the pink river dolphins (tucuxi). Visit a Javanese village for gamelan music experience. Overnight in Paramaribo.
Day 4-5: Upper Suriname River — Maroon Communities
Fly or drive into the interior to the Upper Suriname River region, home to the Maroon people — descendants of enslaved Africans who escaped into the rainforest 300+ years ago and built their own free societies. Two days in a Maroon village: learn about their unique culture that blends West African traditions with Amazonian life, hike to jungle waterfalls, canoe on the river, and experience dam (a Maroon board game), storytelling by the elders, and perhaps a winti ceremony if timing allows. Overnight in the village in traditional accommodations.
Day 6: Brownsberg & Return to Paramaribo
Journey to Brownsberg Nature Park for a final rainforest experience. Hike to the viewpoint over the Brokopondo Reservoir and its eerie skeleton forest. Swim in a jungle waterfall. Afternoon return to Paramaribo. Farewell dinner at a restaurant on the Waterkant featuring Suriname’s famous pom (a Creole casserole), roti, and Parbo beer. Overnight in Paramaribo.
Day 7: Depart Paramaribo
Morning at the Central Market for last souvenirs — Maroon woodcarvings, Javanese batik, and the famous Parbo beer. Transfer to airport.
