Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Tirana & Kruja
Arrive Tirana. City tour: Skanderbeg Square, Bunk’Art, Blloku district. Day trip to Kruja Castle, Skanderbeg Museum, and the Old Bazaar. Traditional Albanian dinner. Overnight in Tirana.
Day 3-4: Albanian Riviera
Drive the breathtaking Albanian Riviera. Visit the Llogara Pass, Dhermi Beach, and Porto Palermo Castle. Ferry to the Karaburun Peninsula for swimming in the Ionian Sea. Overnight in Saranda.
Day 5: Butrint & Gjirokastra (UNESCO)
Morning at Butrint, the 2,500-year-old UNESCO site. Afternoon in Gjirokastra — castle, Skenduli House, and cobblestone bazaar. Overnight in Gjirokastra.
Day 6: Berat (UNESCO)
Drive to Berat, the “City of a Thousand Windows.” Visit Berat Castle (still inhabited), the Onufri Icon Museum with 16th-century paintings, and the beautiful Gorica Bridge. Overnight in Berat.
Day 7-8: Kotor & Budva, Montenegro
Cross into Montenegro. Drive the stunning Bay of Kotor (Europe’s southernmost fjord). Visit Perast and take a boat to Our Lady of the Rocks island church. Explore Kotor’s UNESCO Old Town. Day trip to Budva’s walled city and Sveti Stefan peninsula. Overnight in Kotor.
Day 9-10: Prizren & Pristina, Kosovo
Cross into Kosovo. Explore Prizren, the cultural capital — Sinan Pasha Mosque, the stone bridge, and the hilltop fortress with panoramic views. Continue to Pristina: the Newborn monument, Mother Teresa Cathedral, and the vibrant cafe culture. Overnight in Pristina.
Day 11-12: Skopje, North Macedonia
Cross into North Macedonia. Full day in Skopje: the Old Bazaar (one of the Balkans’ largest), Kale Fortress, Mother Teresa Memorial House, and the controversial Skopje 2014 project’s grandiose statues. Day trip to Matka Canyon for hiking and cave boat tours. Overnight in Skopje.
Day 13-14: Lake Ohrid (UNESCO)
Drive to Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes (UNESCO). Visit the Church of St. John at Kaneo — the most photographed spot in North Macedonia. Explore the ancient theater, Samuel’s Fortress, and the Bay of Bones museum. Boat trip to the monastery of St. Naum. Farewell dinner on the lake. Overnight at Lake Ohrid.
Day 15: Depart from Ohrid or Skopje
Transfer to Ohrid or Skopje Airport. End of an epic Balkan journey!
