Day 1: Arrive Tirana
Welcome to Albania, Europe’s best-kept secret! Airport transfer to your hotel. Afternoon walking tour of Tirana: Skanderbeg Square, the Et’hem Bey Mosque with its beautiful frescoes, the Bunk’Art museum in a Cold War nuclear bunker, and the colorful buildings of the Blloku district. Welcome dinner with traditional tavë kosi (baked lamb with yogurt). Overnight in Tirana.
Day 2: Kruja — Skanderbeg’s Castle
Day trip to Kruja, the historic mountain town where national hero Skanderbeg led a 25-year resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Visit the impressive Kruja Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum. Explore the Old Bazaar, a 500-year-old marketplace with traditional handicrafts, carpets, and antiques. Panoramic views across the Adriatic plain. Overnight in Tirana.
Day 3: Durres & Berat — City of a Thousand Windows
Morning in Durres, Albania’s ancient port city. Visit the Roman amphitheater (the largest in the Balkans, capacity 20,000) and the Venetian Tower. Continue to Berat (UNESCO), the “City of a Thousand Windows.” Walk through the Mangalem and Gorica quarters with their iconic Ottoman houses stacked up the hillside. Visit Berat Castle, one of the few still-inhabited castles with churches and mosques within its walls. Overnight in Berat.
Day 4: Gjirokastra — City of Stone
Drive through the scenic countryside to Gjirokastra (UNESCO), the “City of Stone.” Visit the massive Gjirokastra Castle with its weapons museum and captured US spy plane. Explore the cobblestone streets of the Old Bazaar and visit Skenduli House, a perfectly preserved Ottoman tower house. Taste traditional qifqi (rice balls) at a local restaurant. Overnight in Gjirokastra.
Day 5: Blue Eye Spring & Butrint
Morning at the Blue Eye (Syri i Kalter), a stunning natural spring of dazzling blue water of unknown depth bubbling from the earth. Continue to Butrint National Park (UNESCO), an extraordinary archaeological site spanning 2,500 years — Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian ruins in a stunning lakeside setting. Watch for sea turtles in the lagoon. Overnight in Saranda.
Day 6: Albanian Riviera — Himara & Dhermi
Drive the spectacular Albanian Riviera road, one of Europe’s most stunning coastal routes. Stop at the castle of Porto Palermo, built by Ali Pasha. Swim at the pristine beaches of Himara and Dhermi with their crystal-clear Ionian waters. Lunch at a seaside taverna. Continue to Vlora for overnight.
Day 7: Llogara Pass & Return to Tirana
Drive the dramatic Llogara Pass (1,027m) with breathtaking views of the Ionian coast. Visit Apollonia archaeological park, founded in 588 BC as a Greek colony — walk through the bouleuterion, odeon, and Byzantine monastery. Afternoon return to Tirana. Farewell dinner in the Blloku district. Overnight in Tirana.
Day 8: Depart Tirana
Morning visit to the New Bazaar for local honey, raki, and souvenirs. Airport transfer.
