Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive La Paz
Land at El Alto International Airport — at 4,061m, one of the world’s highest airports. Transfer to your hotel in La Paz. Take it easy on your first day to acclimatize. Evening walk through the Witches’ Market with its dried llama fetuses, potions, and Aymara healing artifacts. Overnight in La Paz.
Day 2: La Paz — The World’s Highest Capital
Full day exploring La Paz, the highest administrative capital on Earth. Ride the Mi Teleferico cable car system — the world’s highest and longest urban cable car network — for breathtaking Andean panoramas. Visit Plaza Murillo, San Francisco Church, and the Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna) — a surreal landscape of eroded clay spires. Overnight in La Paz.
Day 3: Sucre — Bolivia’s White City
Fly to Sucre, Bolivia’s constitutional capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city. Walk the gleaming white colonial streets. Visit the Casa de la Libertad where Bolivia’s independence was declared. Explore the ASUR textile museum with its extraordinary collection of indigenous weavings. Sunset from La Recoleta viewpoint. Overnight in Sucre.
Day 4: Sucre — Dinosaurs & Tarabuco
Visit Cal Orcko — a vertical wall covered with over 5,000 dinosaur footprints, the largest collection in the world. Afternoon excursion to the Tarabuco indigenous market (Sunday only). On other days, hike the Maragua Crater — a geological wonder with colourful rock formations. Overnight in Sucre.
Day 5: Potosi — The Mountain That Eats Men
Drive to Potosi (4,090m), once the world’s richest city thanks to Cerro Rico — the “Mountain that Eats Men.” Visit the Casa de la Moneda, the Spanish colonial mint that produced silver coins for the entire Spanish Empire. Optional visit to the cooperative mines (safety gear provided). Overnight in Potosi.
Day 6: Journey to Uyuni
Scenic drive through the altiplano (high plain) to Uyuni, gateway to the world’s largest salt flat. The landscape becomes increasingly surreal — vast open spaces with llamas and flamingos. Arrive in Uyuni town. Prepare for the salt flat adventure. Overnight in Uyuni.
Day 7: Salar de Uyuni — Day 1
The day you’ve been waiting for! Enter the Salar de Uyuni — 10,582 square kilometers of pure white salt stretching to the horizon. Visit the Train Cemetery with its rusting 19th-century locomotives. Explore Incahuasi Island (Fish Island) — a rocky outcrop covered in giant cacti up to 12m tall in the middle of the salt sea. Create perspective-bending photos. Sunset on the salt flat — the sky and ground merge into a canvas of impossible colors. Overnight in a salt hotel — walls, floors, and furniture all made of salt!
Day 8: Salar de Uyuni — Day 2: Colored Lagoons
Continue deeper into the surreal landscape. Visit Laguna Colorada — a blood-red lake filled with thousands of James’s flamingos. The red color comes from algae and minerals. Pass through the Salvador Dali Desert — rock formations that inspired the artist. See the Sol de Mañana geysers at dawn. Overnight in a basic desert refuge.
Day 9: Eduardo Avaroa Reserve & Laguna Verde
Explore the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. Visit Laguna Verde — a stunning emerald-green lake at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano (5,916m). Hot springs at Polques (4,400m) where you can soak in naturally heated water with Andean views. Return to Uyuni. Overnight in Uyuni.
Day 10: Return to La Paz
Morning flight back to La Paz. Afternoon at leisure for last-minute shopping — alpaca wool products, silver jewelry, and Bolivian chocolate. Farewell dinner with traditional Bolivian cuisine. Overnight in La Paz.
Day 11: Depart La Paz
Transfer to El Alto International Airport. Hasta luego, Bolivia!
