Day 1: Calgary to Banff — Winter Arrival

• Arrive Calgary, transfer to Banff. The drive into the mountains in winter is spectacular — the peaks are snow-capped, the air is crystalline cold, and the Bow Valley is a scene of pristine white. Check into your hotel; afternoon at leisure to acclimate. Evening: walk Banff Avenue under twinkling lights with Cascade Mountain silhouetted against the darkening sky

Day 2-3: Banff Skiing — Three World-Class Resorts

• SkiBig3 — Banff’s three ski areas (Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mount Norquay) are among the best in North America, with 7,748 acres of terrain between them. Sunshine Village boasts the longest non-glacial ski season in Canada (November to late May), with high-alpine bowls and 9 meters of average annual snowfall. Lake Louise Ski Resort is the largest single ski area in Canada, with 4,200 acres — cruise down long groomers with Lake Louise turquoise water visible below (the lake freezes in winter but the color is still discernible). Mount Norquay is the local favorite, the only Banff ski area with night skiing, and the steepest groomed runs in the Rockies
• Day 2: Guided ski day at Sunshine Village. Day 3: Lake Louise Ski Resort — ski with views of glaciers, frozen Lake Louise, and the Château. Or for non-skiers: snowshoeing, ice skating on Lake Louise (the most beautiful skating rink in the world), sleigh rides, dog sledding, or the Banff Gondola (the summit boardwalk in winter — an icy, wind-sculpted wonderland)

Day 4: Johnston Canyon Ice Walk & Banff Hot Springs

• Morning: Johnston Canyon Icewalk — in winter, the canyon transforms into a cathedral of ice. The waterfalls freeze into massive blue columns and curtains, and ice climbers can be seen scaling the frozen Lower Falls (30m). Guided ice walks with ice cleats take you along catwalks bolted to the canyon walls — the frozen river below, icicles hanging like chandeliers, the air intensely cold and still. The experience of walking through a frozen canyon, with the thunder of water under the ice, is unforgettable
• Afternoon: Soak in the Banff Upper Hot Springs — steam rising into the cold winter air, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the ultimate après-ski indulgence. Evening: Optional Banff SnowDays events (usually January — ice carving competitions, snow sculpture exhibitions)

Day 5: Lake Louise Winter Magic

• Full day at winter Lake Louise — the frozen lake becomes a skating rink surrounded by mountains, with an ice castle carved on the lake each winter and a hockey rink. Cross-country skiing on 100km+ of groomed trails. Snowshoeing through silent pine forests. The Château Lake Louise is a winter wonderland — ice bar on the lake, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and high tea with a view of the Victoria Glacier. The lake itself, frozen solid, reflects the mountains in shades of white and blue — a completely different beauty from summer, but equally breathtaking

Day 6: Icefields Parkway Winter Drive & Jasper

• Winter drive along the Icefields Parkway (weather permitting — the parkway is maintained but can close during severe storms). The winter parkway is a different world: frozen waterfalls, snow-covered glaciers, wildlife tracks in fresh snow, and the blue ice of the Athabasca Glacier visible from the road. The Columbia Icefield is closed in winter (the Ice Explorer doesn’t operate), but the views from the Icefield Centre are still awe-inspiring
• Arrive Jasper. The town in winter is quiet, intimate, a true mountain community. Evenings offer the best chance of Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) — Jasper is a Dark Sky Preserve, and winter’s long nights provide optimal aurora viewing conditions. Your guide tracks aurora forecasts and will wake the group for a viewing if conditions are favorable. The experience of standing in Jasper at 2 AM, the temperature -25°C, watching green and purple curtains of light dance across the sky, the Milky Way visible above — it’s both humbling and transcendent

Day 7: Jasper Winter Adventures

• Morning: Maligne Canyon Icewalk — the deepest accessible canyon in Jasper freezes into a blue ice cave. Walk on the frozen river at the canyon bottom (accessible only in winter), looking up at frozen waterfalls, ice caves, and the narrow limestone walls towering 50m above. For the adventurous: ice climbing with professional guides (no experience needed)
• Afternoon choice: skiing at Marmot Basin (Jasper’s ski area, 1,720 acres of uncrowded runs with the highest base elevation in Canada at 1,698m), snowshoeing, or a dog-sledding excursion — mush your own team of huskies through silent winter forests, the only sounds the dogs’ breathing and the runners on snow
• Evening: Miette Hot Springs (if open — seasonal) or the Jasper Planetarium for an indoor astronomy experience, then aurora watching

Day 8: Return to Calgary — Farewell to the Mountains

• Scenic winter drive back to Calgary through the foothills — watch for wildlife (elk, deer, bighorn sheep) against the snow. Arrive Calgary; farewell dinner celebrating a week in the winter Rockies.
