Day 1: Calgary to Banff — Welcome to the Rockies

• Arrive at Calgary International Airport (YYC). Scenic drive to Banff (1.5 hours). As you approach the mountains, the flat Alberta prairie suddenly gives way to the Front Ranges of the Rockies — Castle Mountain, Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain — rising like a wall on the horizon. The transition is dramatic: one moment you’re in farmland, the next, you’re surrounded by peaks
• Banff is Canada’s first national park (1885, the third national park in the world) and a UNESCO World Heritage site (part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks). The town of Banff sits at 1,383m elevation in the Bow River Valley, surrounded by mountains in every direction — the highest incorporated town in Canada
• Afternoon orientation walk along Banff Avenue — the main street with Cascade Mountain (2,998m) as its dramatic backdrop. The street is lined with alpine-style buildings, outdoor shops, and cafes. The air is crisp and clean, scented with pine. Welcome dinner at a classic Canadian restaurant — Alberta beef steak (Alberta produces some of the world’s finest beef, grass-fed on prairie grasslands), wild salmon, and a Caesar — Canada’s national cocktail, invented in Calgary in 1969

Day 2: Banff — Sulphur Mountain & Bow Valley

• Morning Banff Gondola to the summit of Sulphur Mountain (2,281m). The 8-minute gondola ride provides 360° views that improve every second. From the summit boardwalk, you can see six mountain ranges, the town of Banff far below, the Bow River winding through the valley, and on clear days, Mount Assiniboine (3,618m) — the “Matterhorn of the Rockies” — 80km away. Interpretive walks at the summit teach about the geology, wildlife, and history of the region
• Visit the Banff Upper Hot Springs — natural mineral water at 37-40°C, the highest thermal springs in Canada. Indigenous peoples have used the springs for millennia, and the discovery of the hot springs by three Canadian Pacific Railway workers in 1883 led directly to the creation of Banff National Park. Soaking in the pool, surrounded by mountain peaks, with steam rising in the cool air, is a sublime experience
• Afternoon hike on Tunnel Mountain Trail (4.3km round trip, 260m gain) — the most popular hike in Banff, offering panoramic views of the Bow Valley, Mount Rundle, and the town of Banff from the summit. The mountain is named for a proposed railway tunnel that was never built — engineers planned to blast through it, but the route was changed
• Visit the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel — the “Castle in the Rockies,” built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1888 in Scottish baronial style. Walk through the grand lobby, the outdoor terrace with mountain views, and imagine the era when wealthy Victorians arrived by rail for “taking the waters” at the hot springs

Day 3: Lake Louise — The Jewel of the Rockies

• Morning drive to Lake Louise (45 minutes) — arguably the most famous lake in Canada, and for good reason. The turquoise color — shifting from emerald to blue depending on the light — comes from “rock flour”: finely ground glacial sediment suspended in the water that absorbs all colors except the blue-green spectrum. The Victoria Glacier crowns the lake at the far end, framed by Mount Victoria (3,464m), Mount Lefroy, and Mount Temple
• The Fairmont Château Lake Louise sits on the shore like a castle in a fairy tale. Even if not staying, visit the hotel for the view from the Lakeview Lounge — one of the world’s great hotel views. Tea at the Château is a tradition dating back to the hotel’s opening in 1890
• Morning hike along the Lake Agnes Trail (7km round trip, 385m elevation gain) — the classic Lake Louise hike. The trail climbs through subalpine forest to Lake Agnes, a smaller lake at 2,135m with a historic teahouse built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1905. The teahouse serves over 100 types of tea, homemade soup, and sandwiches — all supplies are packed in by staff or helicopter. For the ambitious, continue 1.5km further to the Big Beehive viewpoint — arguably the best view of Lake Louise, looking straight down on the turquoise water and the Château from 2,270m
• Afternoon: Moraine Lake (seasonal road, typically open June–October) — the lake featured on the back of the Canadian $20 bill from 1969 to 1993. The Valley of the Ten Peaks provides a backdrop unmatched in the Rockies. The Rockpile Trail (short, steep) leads to the classic viewpoint. The blue of Moraine Lake seems almost artificially enhanced — but it’s real, arguably even more intense than Lake Louise. Canoe rentals are available — paddling on Moraine Lake, surrounded by the Ten Peaks, is a bucket-list experience

Day 4: Icefields Parkway — The World’s Most Beautiful Drive

• Full-day drive along the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) — consistently ranked among the world’s top scenic drives. 232km of highway connecting Lake Louise to Jasper through the heart of the Canadian Rockies, with over 100 ancient glaciers visible from the road, turquoise lakes, waterfalls, and wildlife — bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, moose, and black bears are commonly seen along the roadway. There are no gas stations or towns between Saskatchewan River Crossing and Jasper — this is pure wilderness
• Stops along the parkway:
  • Bow Lake — the source of the Bow River, fed by the Bow Glacier. The Num-Ti-Jah Lodge on the shore, built by legendary mountain guide Jimmy Simpson in the 1920s, is a historic piece of Rockies lore. The lake is a brilliant turquoise, with Crowfoot Mountain and Bow Glacier as backdrop
  • Peyto Lake — a short walk from the parking area leads to a viewpoint that will make you gasp. Peyto Lake (pronounced PEE-toh) is shaped like a wolf’s head, and its brilliant turquoise color — the most vivid in the Rockies — is fed by Peyto Glacier. Arrive early for the best light and to avoid crowds
  • Columbia Icefield — Athabasca Glacier — one of the largest non-polar ice fields in the world, covering 325 square kilometers with ice up to 365m deep. Take the Ice Explorer — a massive six-wheeled all-terrain vehicle that drives directly onto the Athabasca Glacier. You step out onto ice that’s 400 years old — the air is noticeably colder, the light is refracted in blues, and you can drink the purest water on Earth from glacial melt streams. The glacier has been retreating at an alarming rate — 1.5km in the last 125 years, with markers showing its former extent
  • Sunwapta Falls & Athabasca Falls — two spectacular waterfalls on the parkway. Athabasca Falls, though only 23m high, is the most powerful waterfall in the Rockies by volume — an entire river squeezed through a narrow quartzite gorge. The roar is deafening, the spray refreshing, and the canyon walls — carved over millennia — are smooth and sculpted

Day 5: Jasper National Park — Wild & Untamed

• Jasper National Park is the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies (11,000 square kilometers) — less developed and less crowded than Banff, with a wilder, more remote feel. The park is a Dark Sky Preserve (the second largest in the world at the time of designation), with some of the best stargazing on Earth
• Morning Maligne Lake Cruise to Spirit Island — Maligne Lake is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies (22km long) and arguably the most beautiful. The 1.5-hour cruise takes you past glacier-carved peaks to Spirit Island — a tiny islet of pine trees on a turquoise lake, framed by the Hall of the Gods (three 3,000m+ peaks). The image of Spirit Island is one of the most famous photographs of the Rockies — and the only way to see it is by boat or a multi-day hike
• Afternoon hike at Maligne Canyon — a narrow limestone gorge carved by the Maligne River. Walk along the canyon rim on bridges that cross the chasm at different points — the deepest section drops 55m, and in places, the canyon walls are only 2m apart. In winter, the canyon freezes into a wonderland of ice — guided ice walks are available. The underground river system feeding the canyon is one of the largest karst spring systems in North America
• Evening wildlife drive along the Pyramid Lake Road — elk, deer, bears, and coyotes are commonly seen in the meadows. Watch for the Jasper elk herd, which often grazes along the road at dusk. The light at golden hour in Jasper — mountains glowing rose-gold, lakes reflecting the sky — is photographer’s dream material

Day 6: Jasper — Valley of the Five Lakes & Hot Springs

• Morning hike: Valley of the Five Lakes (4.5km loop, 66m gain) — a pleasant trail past five small lakes, each a different shade of blue-green. This is the Rockies at their most serene — not dramatic canyons but gentle beauty, with the sound of birds and the occasional loon’s haunting call across the water
• Visit Miette Hot Springs — the hottest mineral springs in the Canadian Rockies (water emerges at 54°C, cooled to 40°C for the pool). The drive to the springs is one of the steepest paved roads in Canada, climbing through Fiddle Valley with mountain views. Soaking in hot mineral water with peaks towering above — the perfect way to soothe hiking-weary muscles
• Optional afternoon activities: Jasper SkyTram to the summit of Whistlers Mountain (2,470m, the highest aerial tramway in Canada) for 360° views of six mountain ranges, or a gentle raft float on the Athabasca River — a relaxing way to see wildlife and the valley from water level
• Evening: Jasper Dark Sky Preserve experience — join a stargazing session with an astronomy interpreter. The Milky Way visible to the naked eye, shooting stars, satellites tracking across the sky, and the sheer number of stars visible in truly dark skies — away from any light pollution — is humbling

Day 7: Return to Calgary via Icefields Parkway (Southbound)

• Drive the Icefields Parkway southbound — the views are completely different from the opposite direction. The afternoon light on the mountains, the glaciers glinting in the sun, one last chance for wildlife sightings. Stop at locations you might have missed on the northbound journey: Mistaya Canyon (a narrow, twisting gorge where the Mistaya River has carved deep potholes and sculpted channels), Waterfowl Lakes (twin lakes reflecting Mount Chephren — one of the most photogenic pull-offs on the parkway)
• Arrive in Calgary. Farewell dinner — perhaps at a classic Calgary steakhouse, celebrating a week in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. “The mountains are calling and I must go” — John Muir’s famous words, originally about the Sierra Nevada, apply equally to these peaks

Day 8: Departure

• Transfer to Calgary International Airport. The turquoise lakes, the glaciers, the peaks that touch the sky — the Canadian Rockies will stay with you forever.
