Buildings buried to their second stories, the church steeple piercing through gray ash, the abandoned hotel swimming pool filled with volcanic material. It’s haunting, humbling, and absolutely unique. Afternoon: tea with a Montserrat elder who lived through the eruption, hearing firsthand accounts of survival and resilience. Day 3: Volcano Viewpoints & Rainforest
Morning hike to Garibaldi Hill for the definitive volcano panorama—steaming dome, devastated southern zone, regenerating rainforest, Caribbean Sea beyond. Then hike the Oriole Walkway trail through Centre Hills rainforest, searching for the endemic Montserrat oriole. Afternoon at Woodlands Beach, the island’s only white-sand beach, created by volcanic activity. Swim in calm Caribbean water with the volcano as your backdrop. Overnight northern Montserrat.
Day 4: Farewell to the Volcano Isle
Morning visit to Runaway Ghaut—drink from the spring and the legend says you’ll return. Flight to Antigua, carrying memories of walking through a modern Pompeii and standing at the edge of an active volcano.
