Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Vilnius
Transfer to your hotel in Vilnius Old Town. Evening orientation walk: Cathedral Square, Pilies Street, and the bohemian Užupis district where artists declared their own republic. Welcome dinner with Lithuanian mead (midus). Overnight in Vilnius.
Day 2: Vilnius — Baroque & Bitter History
Full-day Vilnius tour. Morning: Gediminas Tower, Vilnius University (founded 1579) with its 13 courtyards, St. Anne’s Church, and the Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit. Afternoon: the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights (former KGB prison) and the Gates of Dawn. Visit a local amber workshop to learn about Baltic gold. Overnight in Vilnius.
Day 3: Trakai & Kaunas
Morning at Trakai Island Castle on Lake Galvė. Enjoy kibinai (traditional Karaite pastries). Continue to Kaunas, Lithuania’s second city and 2022 European Capital of Culture. Walk Laisvės Alėja (Liberty Avenue), visit the modernist Christ’s Resurrection Basilica, and explore the street art-filled courtyard of the Devil’s Museum. Overnight in Kaunas.
Day 4: Curonian Spit & Nida
Journey to the Curonian Spit, a 98km UNESCO sand peninsula shared by Lithuania and Russia. Ferry from Klaipeda. Visit the Hill of Witches with its whimsical wooden sculptures. Continue to Nida, a charming fishing village where Thomas Mann had his summer house. Climb the Parnidis Dune for breathtaking views of the Baltic Sea and Curonian Lagoon. Overnight in Nida.
Day 5: Liepaja & Riga
Drive along the Baltic coast into Latvia. Stop in Liepaja, the “City Where the Wind is Born” — see the Soviet-era Karosta Prison (now a museum with the option to be “booked in” overnight). Afternoon arrival in Riga. Evening free to explore the Old Town. Overnight in Riga.
Day 6: Riga — The Art Nouveau Capital
Full-day Riga: House of the Blackheads, St. Peter’s Church, the Three Brothers, Riga Castle, and the Swedish Gate. Afternoon dedicated to Riga’s Art Nouveau — Alberta Street is a UNESCO treasure with masterpieces by Mikhail Eisenstein. Visit the Art Nouveau Museum in a restored apartment. Riga Central Market for smoked fish and Latvian rye bread. Overnight in Riga.
Day 7: Sigulda & Cēsis
Day trip to the Gauja River Valley. Visit Turaida Castle, Sigulda’s three medieval fortresses, and the cable car across the valley. Continue to Cēsis, one of Latvia’s prettiest towns with a 13th-century Livonian Order castle and a charming cobblestone Old Town. Lunch at a traditional tavern. Overnight in Riga.
Day 8: Pärnu Spa Town
Cross into Estonia and spend the day in Pärnu. Visit the Pärnu Mud Baths (founded 1838), stroll the sandy beach, and explore the seaside promenade. Afternoon transfer to Tallinn. Overnight in Tallinn.
Day 9: Tallinn — Complete Medieval City
Full-day Tallinn tour: Toompea Castle, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Kohtuotsa viewing platform, St. Olaf’s Church, the Town Hall Pharmacy (Europe’s oldest, 1422), and the Great Guild Hall. Afternoon free for exploration: Katarina Käik (St. Catherine’s Passage) for artisan workshops, or the Seaplane Harbour maritime museum. Farewell medieval banquet at Olde Hansa. Overnight in Tallinn.
Day 10: Depart Tallinn
Morning at leisure. Transfer to Tallinn Airport. Head aega!
