Day 1: Arrival in Ljubljana
Welcome to Slovenia! Your walking adventure begins at Ljubljana Airport, where you will be greeted by your Explore! walking guide. After a short transfer to your hotel, meet the group for a welcome briefing over a drink in the lobby. Your guide outlines the week’s walks, covering terrain, distances, and what to expect from Slovenia’s diverse alpine trails. There is time for a gentle introductory walk through Ljubljana’s green city centre — the city was designed by architect Joze Plecnik to be pedestrian-friendly, and its compact core is perfect for leisurely exploration. Stroll along the willow-lined banks of the Ljubljanica River, cross the Cobbler’s Bridge, and admire the elegant colonnade of the Central Market. Dinner is at a traditional restaurant serving Slovenian classics like buckwheat struklji and Istrian-style jota stew.
Overnight: Ljubljana
Meals: Welcome Dinner
Day 2: Mostnica Gorge — Limestone Wonderland
After an early breakfast, transfer to Ribcev Laz on the shores of Lake Bohinj and check into Hotel Kristal, your base for the next five nights. Set out on your first major walk: the Mostnica Gorge trail. This spectacular 2-kilometre canyon, carved by the Mostnica Stream through solid limestone, features extraordinary rock formations — smooth potholes, narrow passages barely a metre wide, and deep pools of crystalline turquoise water. The trail follows wooden bridges and rocky paths along the rim, with frequent stops to admire the “Little Elephant” rock formation and the Devil’s Bridge, a natural stone arch spanning the gorge. The walk continues through Voje Valley, where you enjoy a packed lunch surrounded by towering mountain peaks. The return route follows an old cart track through peaceful spruce forest, with glimpses of the Bohinj Valley below. Total walking distance: 12 km (7.5 miles), approximately 4-5 hours.
Overnight: Lake Bohinj (Hotel Kristal)
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch
Day 3: Mount Vogel — Summit Panorama Day
Today’s walk ascends to one of Slovenia’s finest panoramic viewpoints. Take the Vogel Cable Car to 1,533 metres, where the sweeping view encompasses Lake Bohinj far below, the entire Julian Alps range, and on clear days, the distant blue line of the Adriatic Sea. From the cable car station, follow high-altitude trails through the Vogel Ski Resort’s summer pastures. The walk crosses the Sija Plateau, a karst landscape of limestone pavement and alpine wildflowers, where you may spot chamois grazing on steep slopes and golden eagles circling overhead. Reach the Orlove Glave viewpoint for a dramatic perspective of Mount Triglav’s north face. After lunch at a mountain hut (try the local štruklji — rolled dumplings filled with cottage cheese), descend via a different path through dwarf pine and larch forest, arriving back at the cable car station. Total walking distance: 10 km (6.2 miles), approximately 5 hours.
Overnight: Lake Bohinj (Hotel Kristal)
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch
Day 4: Savica Waterfall & Triglav Alpine Pastures
Begin with a visit to the mighty Savica Waterfall, one of Slovenia’s most iconic natural landmarks. The waterfall plunges 78 metres in a distinctive A-shape over a vertical limestone cliff, fed by an underground lake system. Climb the 550 stone steps to the viewing platform, where the thunder of the falls and the misty spray create an unforgettable sensory experience. After descending, set off on a trail into the heart of Triglav National Park. This walk passes through the Komarča area, the steep southern wall of the Triglav massif, along the Valley of the Seven Lakes — a high alpine basin dotted with shimmering glacial lakes that give the trail its name. The scenery transitions from dense beech forest to open alpine terrain, where hardy edelweiss and purple gentian flowers dot the meadows in summer. Your guide shares insights into the unique flora and fauna of the Julians, including the elusive ibex and marmot colonies. Total walking distance: 14 km (8.7 miles), approximately 6 hours.
Overnight: Lake Bohinj (Hotel Kristal)
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch
Day 5: Srednja Vas Traditional Village Walk
A gentler day exploring the cultural side of Triglav National Park. Walk from the hotel through the picturesque village of Stara Fuzina, whose name means “Old Forge” — evidence of the iron-working history of the Bohinj Valley. Continue to Srednja Vas (“Middle Village”), where the Ochmerhaus — a 200-year-old farmhouse — has been converted into a museum showcasing traditional Alpine dairy farming. Learn about the summer transhumance tradition, where whole families moved with their cattle to high mountain pastures each June. Walk through flower-strewn hay meadows (protected as Natura 2000 sites for their extraordinary biodiversity — up to 70 plant species per square metre) and alongside traditional wooden hayracks (kozolci), unique to Slovenia. Sample authentic Bohinj cheese and locally produced honey. Stop at the Church of St. John the Baptist, with its remarkable 13th-century frescoes. In the afternoon, you may choose to swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Bohinj or walk to the source of its short outflow river, the Sava Bohinjka. Total walking distance: 9 km (5.6 miles), approximately 3-4 hours.
Overnight: Lake Bohinj (Hotel Kristal)
Meals: Breakfast
Day 6: Pokljuka Plateau High-Altitude Walk
Today’s walk takes you to the Pokljuka Plateau (1,200-1,400m), a vast forested karst plateau famous as a World Cup biathlon venue and for its pristine spruce forests. Drive to the trailhead at Rudno Polje, where hiking signs point in every direction to alpine huts and peaks. Follow well-maintained trails through the dense Norway spruce forest, which opens periodically to reveal spectacular views of Bohinj Valley to the south and the jagged peaks of the central Julian Alps to the north. The walk passes Debela Pec (2,014m) viewpoint and enters the quieter Belska Planina pasture, where cows graze freely in summer and the only sounds are cowbells and wind. Stop at a traditional mountain hut for a lunch of jota (bean and sauerkraut stew) and a cold glass of locally brewed beer. If energy and weather permit, extend the walk to the Lipanca Plateau for views directly into the Triglav Lakes Valley. Total walking distance: 13 km (8.1 miles), approximately 5-6 hours.
Overnight: Lake Bohinj (Hotel Kristal)
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch
Day 7: Vintgar Gorge & Lake Bled Circuit Walk
Depart Bohinj for the highlight of many a Slovenian walking holiday: Vintgar Gorge. This 1.6-kilometre canyon, carved by the turquoise Radovna River, features a spectacular wooden walkway system built in 1893 that clings to the gorge walls, crossing rapids and pools via bridges. The gorge narrows to just a few metres in places, with sheer rock walls rising 50-100 metres on either side. At the end of the trail, the Sum Waterfall — the highest river waterfall in Slovenia at 13 metres — cascades into a deep green pool. After the gorge, transfer to Lake Bled for the grand finale: the 6-kilometre circuit walk around the lake. This easy, flat path circles the entire shoreline, offering constantly changing perspectives of Bled Island, the castle, and the Karavanke mountain range. Stop at viewing points, feed the swans, and finish your walk with the reward of a Bled cream cake at the lakeside Park Cafe. Farewell dinner at a traditional gostilna in the village of Bled.
Overnight: Lake Bled
Meals: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner
Day 8: Departure
After a final lakeside breakfast, transfer to Ljubljana Airport for your departure. Reflect on a week of walking through some of Europe’s most beautiful and underrated mountain landscapes — from the deep gorges of Mostnica and Vintgar to the high alpine panoramas of Mount Vogel and Pokljuka, the thunder of Savica Waterfall, and the fairy-tale perfection of Lake Bled. You have walked in the footsteps of shepherds and poets through a landscape that reveals itself best to those who explore on foot.
