Vanuatu Volcano Adventure: Mount Yasur & Tanna Island Explorer

Day 1: Arrival in Port Vila, Efate

Arrive at Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila, the charming capital of Vanuatu. You will be greeted with a traditional shell lei welcome and transferred to your beachfront resort. Spend the afternoon at leisure — stroll along the waterfront, visit thePort Vila produce market, or relax by the pool. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner featuring fresh local seafood and tropical fruits at a waterfront restaurant overlooking the harbour.

Day 2: Port Vila to Tanna Island — Rainforest & Banyan Tree

After breakfast, take a scenic 45-minute flight to Tanna Island. Upon arrival at White Grass Airport, you will be transferred to your accommodation — traditional bamboo bungalows nestled in lush tropical gardens. In the afternoon, trek through the island’s interior rainforest to discover the world’s largest banyan tree, an awe-inspiring natural monument with hundreds of aerial prop roots. Enjoy dinner prepared by village mamas using fresh garden produce and seafood.

Day 3: Mount Yasur Volcano — Fire at Sunset

Take a morning excursion to the Blue Cave, a stunning natural sea cavern on Tanna’s coast. Swim in its crystal-clear turquoise waters illuminated by sunlight streaming through an underwater opening. After lunch, drive across the ash plains to Mount Yasur — one of the world’s most accessible and continuously active volcanoes. As dusk falls, hike to the crater rim and witness the breathtaking spectacle of molten lava bombs exploding against the darkening sky. This surreal experience will be the highlight of your South Pacific journey. Return to your bungalow for a late dinner and kava ceremony.

Day 4: Kastom Villages & Hot Springs

Visit traditional kastom villages including Yakel, where villagers maintain their ancient way of life wearing traditional namba dress. Meet the John Frum cargo cult community at Sulphur Bay and learn about their fascinating beliefs blending WWII imagery with traditional spirituality. Bathe in the natural hot springs heated by volcanic activity beneath the bay. In the afternoon, visit Port Resolution, a stunning natural harbour named by Captain Cook in 1774, with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

Day 5: Tanna to Pele Island Snorkeling

Fly back to Port Vila in the morning, then transfer by boat to Pele Island, part of Vanuatu’s protected marine reserve. Spend the day snorkeling among vibrant coral gardens teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, and rays. Visit Nguna Island’s extinct volcano crater and the traditional village of Taloa. Enjoy a beach barbecue lunch with fresh coconut water. Return to Port Vila in the late afternoon.

Day 6: Port Vila — Mele Cascades & Departure

Visit the spectacular Mele Cascades, a series of clear turquoise pools and waterfalls cascading through lush tropical rainforest — you can swim right up to the base of the main 35-metre waterfall. Visit the Ekasup Cultural Village for a farewell kastom ceremony with traditional dance and storytelling. Transfer to the airport for your departure flight, carrying memories of Vanuatu’s fire, water, and ancient culture.
