Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrival in Paro & Paro Valley
Arrive at Paro International Airport (Paro, Bhutan). Transfer to your hotel. Explore Paro: visit the Paro Dzong (Rinpung Dzong, a stunning fortress-monastery built in 1646), the National Museum of Bhutan (housed in a historic watchtower), and the Kyichu Lhakhang (one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan, built in the 7th century). Evening welcome dinner with Bhutanese cuisine. Overnight in Paro.
Day 2: Tiger’s Nest Monastery & to Thimphu
Morning hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang Palphug Monastery, one of the most sacred and iconic sites in Bhutan, perched on a cliff 3,120 meters above sea level). The hike takes approximately 2-3 hours each way through beautiful pine forests. Visit the monastery and enjoy the stunning views. After the hike, drive from Paro to Thimphu (approximately 1 hour), the capital of Bhutan. Explore Thimphu: visit the Tashichho Dzong, the Memorial Chorten, the Buddha Dordenma (giant golden Buddha statue), and the National Library. Evening dinner with Bhutanese cuisine. Overnight in Thimphu.
Day 3: Thimphu to Punakha & Punakha Dzong
Morning drive from Thimphu to Punakha (approximately 2-3 hours), over the Dochula Pass (3,140 meters, with stunning views of the Himalayas and 108 chortens). Visit the Punakha Dzong (Pungtang Dechen Photrang Dzong, one of the most beautiful dzongs in Bhutan, built in 1637, at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers). Visit the Chimi Lhakhang (the Fertility Temple, built in the 15th century by the Divine Madman). Evening dinner with Bhutanese cuisine. Overnight in Punakha.
Day 4: Punakha to Haa Valley & to Paro
Morning drive from Punakha to the Haa Valley (approximately 3-4 hours), over the Chele La Pass (3,988 meters, the highest motorable pass in Bhutan, with stunning views of the Himalayas including Mount Jomolhari (7,326 meters)). Visit the Haa Valley, a remote and beautiful valley in western Bhutan, with its stunning scenery, its traditional villages, its beautiful Haa Dzong, and its unique culture. Visit the Haa Dzong, the nearby temples, and the traditional villages. Enjoy the peaceful and unspoiled atmosphere of the Haa Valley. After lunch, drive from Haa Valley back to Paro (approximately 2-3 hours). Evening farewell dinner with Bhutanese cuisine. Overnight in Paro.
Day 5: Paro & Departure
Morning free for last-minute exploration of Paro or shopping for Bhutanese products. Visit the Paro markets or craft shops for souvenirs. After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your departure flight. Concluding your 5-day western Bhutan explorer.
