Qinghai Tours

Turquoise Salt Lakes, Tibetan Plateau & the Roof of the World

Plan My Trip

Explore Qinghai

Qinghai is China best-kept secret — a vast, sparsely populated high-altitude province on the Tibetan Plateau where the sky seems closer and colors are more vivid. Crystalline salt lakes in impossible shades of turquoise, Buddhist monasteries clinging to red cliffs, and the shimmering waters of China largest lake stretching to the horizon — this is the world as it was meant to be seen.

Our private Qinghai tours take you to places most travelers never reach. Walk the salt crust of Chaka Lake mirroring the sky, photograph the emerald waters of Dachaidan Emerald Lake, circumambulate Kumbum Monastery with Tibetan pilgrims, and drive across the Qinghai-Tibet Highway — one of the world highest and most beautiful roads.

Top Experiences

Qinghai Lake

China largest saltwater lake (4,400 sq km) — a vast sapphire expanse at 3,200m. July brings endless fields of yellow rapeseed flowers along the shore. Cycle the 360km loop or simply walk the shoreline at sunrise.

Chaka Salt Lake

The Mirror of the Sky — walk barefoot on a crystalline salt crust that perfectly reflects the sky and clouds. Ride a miniature train across the salt flats and photograph reflections that look like walking on clouds.

Dachaidan Emerald Lake

A collection of jewel-toned salt pools in impossible shades of emerald, turquoise, and jade — each pool a different color depending on mineral concentration. Remote, surreal, and utterly unforgettable.

Kumbum Monastery (Ta’er Si)

The birthplace of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Marvel at the butter sculptures, the 860kg silver stupa, and monks debating philosophy in the courtyard — one of the six great monasteries of Tibet.

Qinghai-Tibet Highway

One of the world highest roads, crossing the Kunlun Mountains and heading toward Lhasa. Stop at Kunlun Pass (4,767m) for views of Jade Pearl Peak, then continue to Hoh Xil nature reserve for Tibetan antelope and wild yaks.

Menyuan Rapeseed Fields

In July, 50,000 hectares of rapeseed flowers bloom simultaneously against a backdrop of snow peaks — a sea of yellow stretching to the horizon. The most spectacular flower display in China, rivaling Provence lavender.

Best Time to Visit

June-September is the window. July for rapeseed flowers at Qinghai Lake and Menyuan. August for the best weather and clearest skies over the salt lakes. October-May is cold with snow — beautiful but challenging logistics.

Travel Tips

  • Qinghai Lake is at 3,200m — acclimatize in Xining (2,200m) for a day first
  • Chaka Lake is best photographed at sunrise or just before sunset
  • Dachaidan is remote — stay overnight in the area for the best light
  • Bring lip balm, sunscreen, and layers — Qinghai is extremely dry and UV-heavy
