Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrival in Port Vila (Efate)
Arrive at Bauerfield International Airport (Port Vila, Efate Island, Vanuatu). Transfer to your hotel. Explore Port Vila, the capital and largest city of Vanuatu, located on the beautiful island of Efate, with its stunning harbor, lush tropical vegetation, and vibrant Melanesian culture. Visit the Port Vila Market (a bustling market with its fresh tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, handicrafts, and local food, a great place to experience the vibrant Ni-Vanuatu culture), the National Museum of Vanuatu (with its excellent collection of artifacts from the various islands of Vanuatu, including traditional masks, carvings, weavings, and the famous slit drums (atingting), and exhibits on the unique cultures and traditions of the Ni-Vanuatu people), the Independence Park, the Parliament Building, and the beautiful waterfront. Visit the Iririki Island (a beautiful resort island just across the harbor from Port Vila, with its beautiful beaches and stunning views) and the nearby Mele Bay. After lunch, take a half-day tour of Efate Island, visiting the beautiful beaches, the Mele Cascades (a beautiful waterfall with its natural swimming pools, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation), the Eton Beach (a beautiful white sand beach with clear water), the Hideaway Island (a beautiful marine sanctuary with its excellent snorkeling and diving, and the famous underwater post office (the only one in the world, where you can send a postcard from underwater)), and the various other beautiful spots around Efate. Visit a traditional Ni-Vanuatu village and experience the local culture, including traditional dances, music, and food. Evening welcome dinner with Ni-Vanuatu cuisine including laplap (the national dish of Vanuatu, a delicious dish made from grated root vegetables (yam, taro, or manioc) mixed with coconut milk and meat or fish, wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in an underground oven (lovo)), tuluk (a similar dish wrapped in banana leaves), fresh tropical fruits, and fresh seafood. Overnight in Port Vila.
Day 2: Port Vila to Tanna Island & Mount Yasur Volcano
Morning fly from Port Vila to Tanna Island (approximately 45 minutes), one of the most beautiful and fascinating islands in Vanuatu, located in the southern part of the archipelago. Tanna is famous for its active volcano (Mount Yasur), its beautiful beaches, its unique traditional culture (including the famous John Frum cargo cult and the traditional villages), and its stunning natural scenery. Upon arrival at Tanna Airport (Whitegrass Airport), transfer to your resort or bungalow. After lunch, visit the nearby Whitegrass Beach (a beautiful white sand beach with clear water, near the airport) and the local village. In the late afternoon, depart for Mount Yasur Volcano (the main attraction of Tanna, one of the most accessible and active volcanoes in the world, a stratovolcano that has been erupting continuously for over 200 years, with its spectacular Strombolian eruptions of lava, ash, and smoke). Mount Yasur is known as the lighthouse of the Pacific because its eruptions can be seen from far out at sea, and it is one of the few volcanoes in the world where you can get up close to the crater and see the eruptions from the rim. Drive to the volcano (approximately 45 minutes from the resorts), passing through the beautiful Tanna countryside with its lush vegetation, traditional villages, and friendly people. Upon arrival at the volcano, hike up to the crater rim (a short but steep hike, with the path marked by the ash and lava rocks), and witness the spectacular eruptions of Mount Yasur. From the rim, you can see into the crater, with its glowing lava, the explosions of lava and ash, and the rumbling of the volcano. The eruptions are frequent (every few minutes), with lava bombs being thrown into the air, creating a spectacular and awe-inspiring show. The experience is particularly magical at sunset and after dark, when the glowing lava and the explosions are even more dramatic against the night sky. Spend the evening at the volcano, watching the eruptions and experiencing the raw power of nature. (Note: access to the crater rim is subject to volcanic activity levels and safety conditions, and you must follow the instructions of your guide and the local authorities.) After the volcano visit, return to your resort. Dinner with local cuisine. Overnight on Tanna Island.
Day 3: Tanna Island – Blue Cave, Champagne Beach & Culture
Morning take a boat trip to the Blue Cave (one of the most beautiful and famous attractions on Tanna Island, a stunning sea cave with its crystal-clear blue water, created by the erosion of the volcanic rock by the sea). The Blue Cave is accessible by boat, and you can swim into the cave through a narrow opening, emerging into a beautiful cavern with its stunning blue water (the water appears blue because of the way the light reflects off the white sand and the volcanic rock). Swimming in the Blue Cave is a magical and unforgettable experience, with the crystal-clear water, the beautiful blue color, and the stunning cave formations. After the Blue Cave, visit the nearby snorkeling spots around Tanna, with their beautiful coral reefs and abundant marine life (the waters around Tanna are teeming with tropical fish, coral reefs, sea turtles, and sometimes dolphins). After lunch, visit Champagne Beach (one of the most beautiful beaches in Vanuatu, a stunning white sand beach with crystal-clear turquoise water, located on the eastern side of Tanna Island, near the village of Waisisi). The beach is named Champagne Beach because of the bubbles that rise from the volcanic sand underwater, creating a champagne-like effect. The beach is absolutely stunning, with its powdery white sand, clear turquoise water, and the beautiful backdrop of lush tropical vegetation and volcanic hills. Spend the afternoon swimming, snorkeling, relaxing on the beach, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Visit the nearby village and meet the local people, learning about their traditional way of life. After the beach, visit a traditional Tanna village and experience the unique culture of Tanna, including the famous John Frum movement (a unique cargo cult that emerged on Tanna during World War II, when American soldiers were stationed on the island and brought with them cargo (supplies, equipment, and goods), the John Frum movement believes that John Frum (a mythical figure based on an American soldier) will return with cargo and wealth, and is a fascinating and unique cultural phenomenon). Visit a John Frum village and learn about this unique belief system. Visit the traditional villages and see the traditional dances, music, and customs of Tanna. Visit the famous Yaohnanen Village (where the people worship Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, as a divine being, the Prince Philip Movement, another unique cargo cult on Tanna, which believes that Prince Philip is the son of a mountain spirit who will return to Tanna with wealth and goods). Visit the village and learn about this fascinating belief. Evening enjoy a traditional dinner (lovo) with the villagers, with food cooked in an underground oven, and traditional dances and music. Overnight on Tanna Island.
Day 4: Tanna to Port Vila & Departure
Morning take a final walk on the beach or visit the local village for last-minute cultural experiences. Do some last-minute shopping for Ni-Vanuatu products including traditional carvings, weavings, shell jewelry, and local products. After breakfast, fly from Tanna Island back to Port Vila (approximately 45 minutes). Upon arrival in Port Vila, depending on your flight schedule, do some last-minute shopping at the Port Vila Market or the duty-free shops. Visit the National Museum for a final look at the artifacts, or relax at a café overlooking the harbor. Transfer to Bauerfield International Airport for your departure flight.
