Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Khartoum & City Tour

Arrive at Khartoum International Airport (Khartoum, Sudan). Transfer to your hotel. Explore Khartoum, the capital and largest city of Sudan, located at the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile rivers, a vibrant city with its bustling markets, colonial architecture, and fascinating museums. Visit the National Museum of Sudan (one of the most important museums in Africa, with its excellent collection of artifacts from the ancient Nubian kingdoms, including the famous statues of the Nubian kings, the beautiful frescoes from the Christian Nubian period, the ancient Egyptian artifacts, and the various exhibits on the history and culture of Sudan from prehistoric times to the present). Visit the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile (the famous point where the two Niles meet to form the Nile River, with the two different colored waters visible as they merge). Visit the Tuti Island (a beautiful island at the confluence of the two Niles, with its traditional villages, farms, and beautiful scenery). Visit the Khartoum Market (Souq al-Arabi, a bustling market with its fresh produce, spices, textiles, crafts, and local food, a great place to experience the vibrant Sudanese culture). Visit the Presidential Palace and the various colonial buildings. Evening welcome dinner with Sudanese cuisine including ful medames (fava beans, the national dish), kisra (sourdough flatbread), molokhia, and fresh tropical fruits. Overnight in Khartoum.

Day 2: Khartoum to Meroë Pyramids

Morning drive from Khartoum to Meroë (approximately 3-4 hours), the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Kush, located on the east bank of the Nile, famous for its stunning pyramids (there are over 200 pyramids at Meroë, more than in all of Egypt, built as tombs for the Nubian kings and queens of the Kingdom of Kush from approximately 300 BC to 300 AD). The Meroë pyramids are smaller and steeper than the Egyptian pyramids, with beautiful decorative elements including reliefs, inscriptions, and the famous temple of the god Apedemak (the lion god of the Nubians). Explore the pyramids: visit the Northern Cemetery (with the largest and most impressive pyramids, including the pyramids of the famous Nubian kings and queens such as King Taharqa, King Aspelta, and the famous Candaces (queens) of Meroë), the Southern Cemetery (with the earlier pyramids and the tombs of the nobles), and the Western Cemetery. Visit the temple of Apedemak (the lion god temple, with its beautiful reliefs depicting the Nubian kings and queens making offerings to the gods). Visit the nearby Roman fortress and the various other ancient sites. After lunch, visit the nearby ancient site of Naga (approximately 1 hour from Meroë), an ancient Nubian city with its beautiful temples including the Temple of Apedemak (the famous lion temple with its stunning reliefs), the Temple of Amun, and the Roman kiosk (a beautiful Roman-style building with its unique architecture). Visit the ancient site of Musawwarat es-Sufra (approximately 30 minutes from Naga), a mysterious ancient site with its huge Great Enclosure (a massive complex of walls, courtyards, ramps, and columns, the purpose of which is still debated by archaeologists, possibly a training ground for elephants, a palace complex, or a religious center). Visit the Great Enclosure and the Temple of Apedemak at Musawwarat. Evening return to the Meroë area or continue to Karima. Dinner with local cuisine. Overnight in Meroë area or Karima.

Day 3: Karima & Jebel Barkal

Morning visit Jebel Barkal (a stunning holy mountain in northern Sudan, near the town of Karima, considered a sacred site by the ancient Nubians and Egyptians, with its beautiful pyramids at the base, the Temple of Amun (built by the Egyptian pharaoh Thutmose III and expanded by Ramses II), and the various other ancient sites. Jebel Barkal was the spiritual center of the Kingdom of Kush and was believed to be the home of the god Amun). Visit the pyramids at Jebel Barkal (there are approximately 13 pyramids at the base of the mountain, built as tombs for the Nubian kings and queens of the Napatan period). Visit the Temple of Amun at Jebel Barkal (with its beautiful columns, reliefs, and the famous statue of the god Amun). Visit the various other temples and sites around Jebel Barkal, including the Temple of Mut, the Temple of Hathor, and the various chapels and shrines. Visit the nearby town of Karima and the local market. After lunch, visit the ancient site of Kerma (approximately 1 hour from Karima), the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Kerma (one of the earliest African civilizations, dating back to approximately 2500 BC), with its famous Western Deffufa (a massive mud-brick temple structure, one of the oldest surviving structures in sub-Saharan Africa, standing over 18 meters tall). Visit the Western Deffufa, the Eastern Deffufa, the ancient cemetery, and the various other sites at Kerma. Visit the Kerma Museum (with its collection of artifacts from the ancient Kingdom of Kerma, including the famous statues, pottery, and jewelry). Evening return to Karima or drive back towards Khartoum. Dinner with local cuisine. Overnight in Karima or on the way back to Khartoum.

Day 4: Return to Khartoum & Nubian Culture

Morning drive back to Khartoum (approximately 4-5 hours), enjoying the beautiful Sudanese scenery along the way, with the Nile River, the desert, and the traditional villages. Upon arrival in Khartoum, check into your hotel. After lunch, visit the Nubian villages near Khartoum and meet the Nubian people, learning about their traditional culture, their history, their language (Nubian languages), their traditional architecture (the famous Nubian houses with their colorful decorations and domed roofs), their traditional crafts, and their way of life. Visit a traditional Nubian house and enjoy the famous Nubian hospitality (the Nubian people are known for their warm hospitality and their beautiful traditional culture). Visit the nearby Omdurman (the historic city across the Nile from Khartoum, the former capital of the Mahdist State, with its famous Mahdi’s Tomb, the Khalifa’s House Museum, the Omdurman Market, and the famous Sufi dancing at the Hamad al-Nil Tomb). Visit the Mahdi’s Tomb (the tomb of Muhammad Ahmad, the Mahdi, who led a successful revolt against the Egyptian-British rule in Sudan in the 1880s, a beautiful domed tomb that is an important religious and historical site). Visit the Khalifa’s House Museum (the former residence of the Khalifa Abdallahi ibn Muhammad, the successor of the Mahdi, now a museum with exhibits on the Mahdist period). Visit the Omdurman Market (one of the largest markets in Sudan, with its bustling atmosphere and wide variety of goods). Visit the Hamad al-Nil Tomb for the famous Sufi dancing (every Friday afternoon, the Sufi dervishes gather at the tomb for their traditional dancing and chanting, a colorful and spiritual spectacle with the dervishes in their colorful robes, dancing and chanting in a trance-like state). Evening farewell dinner with Sudanese cuisine, reflecting on the incredible archaeological and cultural experiences of the trip. Overnight in Khartoum.

Day 5: Khartoum & Departure

Morning free for last-minute exploration of Khartoum or shopping for Sudanese products including traditional crafts, textiles, jewelry, spices, and local products. Visit the Khartoum Market or the craft shops for souvenirs. Visit the National Museum of Sudan for a final look at the artifacts, or relax at a café overlooking the Nile. Visit the Tuti Island for a final walk and enjoy the beautiful scenery at the confluence of the two Niles. After lunch, transfer to Khartoum International Airport for your departure flight.
