Sudan Ancient Kingdoms: 6-Day Meroe, Naqa & Nubian Heritage Tour

Day 1: Arrive Khartoum — Nile Confluence

Arrive at Khartoum International Airport. Transfer to hotel. Visit the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile — stand at the exact point where the two great rivers merge. Sudan National Museum with its rescued Nubian temples and Kushite artifacts. Welcome dinner on Nile Street.

Day 2: Omdurman Cultural Day

Explore Omdurman — the historic capital of the Mahdist state. Visit Khalifa’s House Museum and the Mahdi’s Tomb. Wander through the vast Omdurman Souq — one of Africa’s greatest traditional markets. Evening: attend the mesmerizing Sufi Dervish whirling ceremony at Hamed al-Nil Mosque.

Day 3: Meroe Pyramids

Morning drive 200km north through the Nubian Desert to Meroe. Arrive at the Royal Pyramids of Meroe — over 200 steep-sided pyramids of Kushite kings and queens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the pyramids, Royal Baths, and city ruins. Sunset photography with spectacular golden desert light. Camp near the pyramids under the stars.

Day 4: Naqa & Musawwarat es-Sufra

Sunrise at the pyramids. Drive to Naqa — visit the Lion Temple dedicated to the god Apedemak, featuring unique Kushite-Egyptian-Roman fusion art. The Roman-style kiosk showing ancient cultural crossroads. Continue to Musawwarat es-Sufra — explore the Great Enclosure, one of the largest archaeological complexes in Nubia. Return to Khartoum or camp.

Day 5: Old Dongola & Nubian Village

Drive north to Old Dongola — the medieval capital of the Christian Nubian Kingdom of Makuria. Explore Throne Hall ruins, churches with early Christian frescoes. Afternoon visit to a traditional Nubian village along the Nile. Share tea with a Nubian family in their brilliantly painted mud-brick home. Overnight in Nubian guesthouse.

Day 6: Return to Khartoum & Departure

Morning return to Khartoum. Last-minute shopping for Sudanese crafts and silver jewelry along Nile Street. Transfer to Khartoum International Airport for departure.
