Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrival in Jakarta

Arrive at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Jakarta, Indonesia). Transfer to your hotel. Explore Jakarta: visit the National Monument (Monas), Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta Cathedral, Kota Tua (Old Town) with its Dutch colonial architecture, and the various museums. Evening welcome dinner with Indonesian cuisine. Overnight in Jakarta.

Day 2: Jakarta to Sorong (Gateway to Raja Ampat)

Morning fly from Jakarta to Sorong (approximately 4-5 hours), the gateway to Raja Ampat, located on the western tip of West Papua. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel or dive resort. Explore Sorong: visit the local market, the waterfront, and the various shops. After lunch, visit the nearby beaches and enjoy the tropical scenery. Evening briefing on the Raja Ampat diving/snorkeling itinerary. Dinner with Indonesian and Papuan cuisine. Overnight in Sorong.

Day 3: Sorong to Raja Ampat – First Dives

Morning transfer by boat to Raja Ampat (approximately 2-3 hours), the archipelago of over 1,500 islands located off the western tip of West Papua, famous as the epicenter of marine biodiversity with the highest recorded species diversity on Earth (over 1,500 species of fish, 75% of all known coral species, and a huge variety of marine life including manta rays, wobbegong sharks, walking sharks, pygmy seahorses, and many others). Check into your liveaboard or dive resort. Afternoon first dives/snorkels at the famous sites around Raja Ampat, including Cape Kri (famous for its incredible fish schools and the record for the most fish species recorded in a single dive – over 284 species), Blue Magic (famous for manta rays and large pelagics), and the various other sites. Evening enjoy the beautiful sunset over the islands. Dinner on board or at the resort. Overnight in Raja Ampat (liveaboard or resort).

Day 4: Raja Ampat Diving – Manta Rays & Wrecks

Full day diving/snorkeling in Raja Ampat. Morning dive at Manta Point (famous for manta ray sightings, with both reef mantas and oceanic mantas often seen feeding and cleaning at the cleaning stations). Visit the famous Blue Magic site for large pelagics including manta rays, reef sharks, and large schools of fish. Afternoon dive at the famous sites around the islands, including the various coral gardens, wall dives, and the famous sites for macro life including pygmy seahorses, frogfish, ghost pipefish, and many other rare and unusual species. Visit the nearby islands and enjoy the beautiful scenery, including the famous limestone karst islands with their stunning shapes and the beautiful lagoons. Evening enjoy the beautiful sunset and the starry sky (Raja Ampat has very little light pollution, making it excellent for stargazing). Dinner and briefing for the next day’s dives. Overnight in Raja Ampat.

Day 5: Raja Ampat Diving – Macro Life & Islands

Full day diving/snorkeling in Raja Ampat, focusing on the incredible macro life and the beautiful islands. Morning dive at the famous sites for macro life, including the various sites around the islands where you can find pygmy seahorses (including the famous Bargibanti pygmy seahorse, the smallest known seahorse species, found on sea fans), Denise’s pygmy seahorse, Satomi’s pygmy seahorse, and many other species. Look for frogfish (including the famous warty frogfish, painted frogfish, and giant frogfish), ghost pipefish (including the robust ghost pipefish, velvet ghost pipefish, and ornate ghost pipefish), seahorses, pipefish, and many other rare and unusual species. Afternoon dive at the famous sites around the islands, including the beautiful coral gardens with their vibrant coral and abundant fish life. Visit the nearby islands and go for a hike on one of the islands, enjoying the beautiful tropical scenery and the birdlife (Raja Ampat is also famous for its birdlife, including the famous birds of paradise, which can be seen on the islands during the mating season). Visit the local villages on the islands and meet the local people, learning about their traditional way of life. Evening enjoy the beautiful sunset and the starry sky. Dinner and briefing. Overnight in Raja Ampat.

Day 6: Raja Ampat Diving – Final Dives & to Sorong

Morning final dives/snorkels in Raja Ampat at the famous sites, including a final visit to Cape Kri for the incredible fish schools, or a visit to one of the other famous sites. Enjoy the last views of the incredible marine life of Raja Ampat. After the final dives, return to Sorong (approximately 2-3 hours by boat). Upon arrival in Sorong, check into your hotel. Afternoon free for relaxation or exploration of Sorong. Visit the local market for some last-minute shopping for Indonesian and Papuan products. Evening farewell dinner for the Raja Ampat portion of the trip, reflecting on the incredible diving experiences. Overnight in Sorong.

Day 7: Sorong to Jayapura & to Wamena (Baliem Valley)

Morning fly from Sorong to Jayapura (approximately 2-3 hours), the capital of Papua province, located on the northern coast of New Guinea. Upon arrival in Jayapura, transfer to the domestic terminal for your connecting flight to Wamena (approximately 1 hour), the gateway to the Baliem Valley, located in the central highlands of Papua at an altitude of approximately 1,600 meters. The Baliem Valley is a beautiful mountain valley surrounded by stunning mountain peaks, with its lush green terraced gardens, traditional villages, and the Dani and Yali tribes who have maintained their traditional way of life for centuries. Upon arrival in Wamena, transfer to your hotel or guesthouse. Explore Wamena: visit the Wamena Market (a bustling market with its fresh produce, sweet potatoes, pigs, and local crafts, a great place to experience the vibrant highland culture), the various shops and restaurants, and the beautiful surrounding scenery. After lunch, visit a nearby Dani village and meet the local people, learning about their traditional way of life, their agriculture (the highlands are famous for their sweet potatoes, which are the staple food, and their pig farming, with pigs being a symbol of wealth and status), their social structure, and their customs. Visit the traditional Dani houses (the honai, round thatched-roof houses) and the traditional villages. Evening welcome dinner with Papuan cuisine including roasted pig (babi bakar), sweet potatoes, and local vegetables. Overnight in Wamena.

Day 8: Baliem Valley – Dani Villages & Culture

Full day exploring the Baliem Valley and the Dani villages. Morning visit the traditional Dani villages in the valley, including the famous villages of Wosilimo, Jiwika, and the surrounding area. Visit a Dani village and meet the village chief and elders, learning about the traditional Dani culture, their social structure, their customs, and their traditional crafts. Watch a traditional Dani dance performance, with the dancers in their traditional regalia including the famous koteka (penis gourd worn by the men), body paint, and traditional ornaments, dancing to the rhythm of drums and chanting. Visit the Dani war dance (a traditional dance reenacting the famous inter-tribal warfare that was once common in the Baliem Valley, with the warriors in their full regalia carrying traditional weapons including bows, arrows, and spears). Visit the nearby Baliem River and the beautiful surrounding scenery, with its lush green terraced gardens, traditional villages, and stunning mountain peaks. Day 9: Baliem Valley – Yali Tribe & Trekking

Full day trekking in the Baliem Valley to visit the Yali tribe villages (the Yali people live in the more remote areas of the Baliem Valley, to the east of Wamena, and they have maintained their traditional way of life even more than the Dani, with many still wearing traditional clothing and practicing traditional customs). Trek through the beautiful Baliem Valley, passing through lush green terraced gardens, traditional villages, and stunning mountain scenery. Cross the Baliem River and hike through the beautiful countryside. Visit a Yali village and meet the local people, learning about their traditional culture, their way of life, their agriculture, and their customs. The Yali people are known for their distinctive traditional clothing (the men wear kotekas and the women wear skirts made from woven fiber), their body paint, and their traditional dances and music. Watch a traditional Yali dance performance and learn about their culture. Visit the traditional Yali houses and the village. After lunch, continue trekking through the valley, visiting more villages and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Hike to a viewpoint for stunning panoramic views of the valley and the surrounding mountains. Evening return to Wamena (or stay in a village homestay if preferred). Dinner with local cuisine. Day 10: Baliem Valley – Salt Mines & Traditional Life

Morning visit the famous salt mines of the Baliem Valley (the traditional salt-making process is an important part of the highland culture, with salt being a valuable commodity used for trading and for food preservation. The salt is made by filtering water through salty soil and then evaporating the water over fires, a process that has been used for centuries). Visit a traditional salt-making village and watch the salt-making process, learning about the traditional methods and the importance of salt in the highland culture. Visit the nearby villages and the beautiful countryside. After lunch, visit a traditional pig feast (bakar batu, the traditional stone-roasting method used for cooking pigs and other food for special occasions. Day 11: Wamena to Jayapura & City Tour

Morning fly from Wamena to Jayapura (approximately 1 hour). Upon arrival in Jayapura, transfer to your hotel. Explore Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, located on the beautiful Humboldt Bay on the northern coast of New Guinea. Visit the historic sites of Jayapura including the MacArthur Monument (commemorating General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters in Jayapura during World War II), the Papua Provincial Museum (with its exhibits on the history, culture, and natural heritage of Papua), the various markets and shops, and the beautiful waterfront. Visit the nearby beaches and enjoy the tropical scenery. After lunch, visit the nearby town of Sentani and the beautiful Lake Sentani (a stunning freshwater lake surrounded by beautiful mountains, with its traditional villages on stilts over the water, and the famous Lake Sentani Festival held annually in June, celebrating the culture of the Sentani people). Day 12: Jayapura to Jakarta & City Tour

Morning fly from Jayapura to Jakarta (approximately 4-5 hours). Upon arrival in Jakarta, transfer to your hotel.
